Book excerpt: Viscoelasticity and Collective Cell Migration: An Interdisciplinary Perspective Across Levels of Organization focuses on the main viscoelastic parameters formulated based on multiscale constitutive modeling and how to measure these rheological parameters based on existent micro-devices such as micro-rheology and micro-elastography. The book sheds light on inter-relationships across viscoelasticity scales, an essential step for understanding various biomedical processes such as morphogenesis, wound healing and cancers invasion. Cumulative effects of structural changes at subcellular and cellular levels influence viscoelasticity at a supracellular level are also covered, providing valuable insights for biologists, physicists, engineers, students and researchers in the field of developmental biology. As this is a complex multidisciplinary field, perspectives are included from experts in biology, biochemistry, biomedicine, biophysics and biorheology. Readers will gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics that represent challenges and the necessity for further development in the field. Discusses the biological/biochemical mechanisms of collective cell migration Covers the inter-relation between collective cell migration and viscoelasticity by proposing rheological parameters Contains critical consideration of various experimental techniques that are suitable to measure these parameters

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the tissue is formed or regenerated, cells migrate collectively and remained adherent. However, it is still unclear what are the roles of cell-substrate and intercellular interactions in regulating collective cell migration. In this chapter, we introduce our newly developed finite element cellular model to simulate the collective cell migration and explore the effects of mechanical feedback between cells and between cell and substrate. Our viscoelastic model represents one cell with many triangular elements. Intercellular adhesions between cells are represented as linear springs. Furthermore, we include a mechano-chemical feedback loop between cell-substrate mechanics and cell migration. Our results reproduce a set of experimental observation of patterns of collective cell migration during epithelial wound healing. In addition, we demonstrate that cell-substrate determined mechanics play an important role in regulating persistent and oriented collective cell migration. This chapter illustrates that our finite element cellular model can be applied to study a number of tissue related problems regarding cellular dynamic changes at subcellular level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of theoretical and experimental contributions to cancer research from different fields of physics, from biomechanics and soft-condensed matter physics to the statistical mechanics of complex systems. Reviewing these contributions and providing a sophisticated overview of the topic, this is the first book devoted to the emerging interdisciplinary field of cancer physics. Systematically integrating approaches from physics and biology, it includes topics such as cancer initiation and progression, metastasis, angiogenesis, cancer stem cells, tumor immunology, cancer cell mechanics and migration. Biological hallmarks of cancer are presented in an intuitive yet comprehensive way, providing graduate-level students and researchers in physics with a thorough introduction to this important subject. The impact of the physical mechanisms of cancer are explained through analytical and computational models, making this an essential reference for cancer biologists interested in cutting-edge quantitative tools and approaches coming from physics.

FEM is a widely used technique for numerical simulations in many areas of physics and engineering. It has gained increased popularity over recent years for the solution of complex engineering and science problems. FEM is now a powerful and popular numerical method for solving differential equations, with flexibility in dealing with complex geometric domains and various boundary conditions. The method has a wide range of applications in various branches of engineering such as mechanical engineering, thermal and fluid flows, electromagnetics, business management, and many others. This book describes the development of FEM and discusses and illustrates its specific applications.
