It's not lying, exactly, and the freedom of reinvention makes those tough years in the past a little easier to bear. So when she meets writer Clayton Miller, she recognizes the suspicious signs of someone who wants to shrug off his old life. Untangling the web of secrets they've constructed creates an unlikely friendship-until Alice discovers that Clayton has betrayed her in the worst possible way. The author of fifteen international bestsellers, Erica James deftly explores infidelity, bereavement, and the bonds of family with a sparkling voice that will resonate long after the book is finished. Praise for Erica James "Intense, compelling stuff." -OK! magazine "The author writes with a sturdy, feel-good optimism." -Sunday Times "It is a captivating read: beautifully written." -Daily Telegraph "You know you have made it as a storyteller writer when readers simply cannot put your book down...Erica James has this page-turning ability in abundance...I wouldn't have thought this writer could get any better, but she has!" -Welsh Country

Book excerpt: When a young boy's beloved plum tree falls in a storm, he feels like he's lost both a friend and a connection to his old home. A young boy, recently arrived from Korea, finds a glorious plum tree in his new backyard. It reminds him of a tree his family had back home, and he names it "Plumee" for the deep purple plums on its branches. Whenever the boy is homesick, he knows he can take shelter in Plumee's tall branches. And when a storm brings the old tree down, he and his friends have all kinds of adventures on its branches, as it becomes a dragon, a treehouse, and a ship in their imaginations. But soon it's time to say goodbye when the remains of the tree are taken away. Before long, a new plum tree is planted, new blossoms bloom, and a new friendship takes root. A South Korean immigrant herself, Hope Lim brings her perspective on the struggle for child immigrants to feel at home to bear through spare, poetic text, perfectly matched by soft, lyrical illustrations by Korean artist Il Sung Na. Book excerpt: An exploration of the dialogue that emerged after 1776 between different visions of what it meant to use new technologies to transform the land. After 1776, the former American colonies began to reimagine themselves as a unified, self-created community. Technologies had an important role in the resulting national narratives, and a few technologies assumed particular prominence. Among these were the axe, the mill, the canal, the railroad, and the irrigation dam. In this book David Nye explores the stories that clustered around these technologies. In doing so, he rediscovers an American story of origins, with America conceived as a second creation built in harmony with God's first creation. While mainstream Americans constructed technological foundation stories to explain their place in the New World, however, marginalized groups told other stories of destruction and loss. Native Americans protested the loss of their forests, fishermen resisted the construction of dams, and early environmentalists feared the exhaustionof resources. A water mill could be viewed as the kernel of a new community or as a new way to exploit labor. If passengers comprehended railways as part of a larger narrative about American expansion and progress, many farmers attacked railroad land grants. To explore these contradictions, Nye devotes alternating chapters to narratives of second creation and to narratives of those who rejected it.Nye draws on popular literature, speeches, advertisements, paintings, and many other media to create a history of American foundation stories. He shows how these stories were revised periodically, as social and economic conditions changed, without ever erasing the earlier stories entirely. The image of the isolated frontier family carving a homestead out of the wilderness with an axe persists to this day, alongside later images and narratives. In the book's conclusion, Nye considers the relation between these earlier stories and such later American developments as the conservation movement, narratives of environmental recovery, and the idealization of wilderness.

Book excerpt: It came as a shock, when self-styled 'ghetto queen, ' Geneva, was contacted by lawyers who claimed that Stanley Walters, the deceased uptown financier, was her father. His will contained several conditions that had to be met before she could inherit what was left to her. One condition was that she had to live with her sister, a girl who was the same age as Geneva, for a full year to forge sisterly bonds. Geneva left Froggie, her 'ghetto don, ' behind and found herself in the rarified atmosphere of uptown living. She had to contend with Pamela, her father's widow, and the attention of a suave up-towner, Justin, who was determined that she should forget her past and move on with him.

Love was for other people, and she basked in the results of watching people find their happily ever afters. Imagine her surprise when serendipity came knocking and she found herself falling head over heels. Her family has been dying of curiosity for months to find out who has Eve sneaking off to talk to in the middle of movies, or has her turning down events because she "has a date." Her secret has them all frantically trying to discover who has stolen the red headed dynamo's heart. Eve promises everyone that her certain someone will be attending their annual family Thanksgiving celebration... but first, she has to pick up a family friend from London at the airport. Book excerpt: Arthur turned and strode toward us. He was magnificent, and I will never forget that, in that moment, I first loved him. And I believe--had I known what the future held for us: all the trouble, torment, battle, and grief of our lives--I still believe that I would have yielded my heart into his keeping as I did then . . . In a sweeping epic of the imagination, Alice Borchardt enters the wondrous realm of Arthurian legend and makes it her own. The Dragon Queen is the first volume in a trilogy of novels that boldly re-imagines Camelot--and casts Guinevere as a shrewd, strong-willed, magical warrior queen. Born into a world of terrible strife, where war is constant and weapons are never far from the hands of men or women, Guinevere, daughter of a mighty pagan queen, is a threat to her people and a prize to the dreaded sorcerer Merlin. Sent into hiding, she grows up under the protection of a shapeshifting man-wolf and an ornery Druid. But even on the remote coast of Scotland, where dragons feed and watch over her, she is not safe from the all-seeing High Druid Merlin. He knows the young beauty's destiny, and he will stop at nothing to prevent what has been foretold. For if Guinevere becomes Queen and Arthur, King, they will bring a peace to the land that will leave the power-hungry Merlin a shriveled magician in a weary cloak. Yet Guinevere possesses power of her own--dazzling power to rival even that of Merlin. Summoned from her home by forces she cannot fathom, she travels from the Underworld to an Otherworld of the Past, at each step calling on ancient powers to aid her way. When young Guinevere proves her mettle to an embarrassed Merlin, even her faithful dragon protectors cannot prevent the evil that the sorcerer rains down. Seeking revenge, Merlin banishes Arthur to a world from which the only escape is death. Now Guinevere must face Merlin's wrath without him--and prove that she is worthy of being Arthur's Queen. From the glass-roofed Great Hall at Tintigal to the lush garden forts of Wales, Alice Borchardt details the travels of Guinevere in a rich fabric of prose. The Dragon Queen is a novel of great emotional depth, timeless romance, and soul-stirring adventure.

Book excerpt: INDIEREADER AWARD WINNER FOR BEST CHICK LIT! " MADE FOR ME by Kathryn Biel is like your favorite binge-worthy television series--a fun reality show romp bursting with drama, romance, and high fashion." READER'S FAVORITE AWARD WINNER! "This is what I think of when I think 'Chick Lit.' Light, easy, fun, funny, and something I smile about every time I think of it. It will leave you wanting just a little bit more. I highly recommend MADE FOR ME." I've committed a cardinal sin in my traditional Italian family. I'm 29 and unmarried. Not only that, but I'm now jobless and homeless and moving back into my parents' basement. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so applying for a reality TV fashion show seems like a good idea. And it is, until I find myself on the show, Made for Me, tasked with designing a wedding gown for a princess. It's pretty apparent I'm the underdog here—vanilla in a sea of thirty-one flavors—but I need to prove to everyone, most of all myself, that I can do this. And I know I can, if only I could focus on designing instead of falling in love. Maybe, just maybe, I can do both?
