Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Messianic Message of the Old Testament The man who attempts to describe, or even to photograph, jewels, must confess that his best representations cannot convey their lustre and brilliance. It is a better service to exhibit the gems themselves, and with them to contribute a statement of their history and value. Even then many a casual observer will fail to understand their worth and to appreciate their beauty. The messages of the Hebrew prophets are more precious than jewels, and deserve a much more careful consideration. In the present work their utterances are quoted, translated and arranged in such a form as to bear as nearly as possible their original freshness and vigor; historical and literary settings, which are not less, but rather more, vital in prophecy than in other por tions of the Bible, are studiously set forth; and, with becoming reserve, and still with hearty, appreciative faith, the Messianic import is frankly estimated. The writer, however, dares not presume that all the divine excellence of each great prophecy is reflected in these pages; but he is content to hope that, on the one hand, the scholar may here find some acceptable sugges tions, and that, on the other hand, the common reader may have reason to rejoice in a clearer perception of that wonderful wis dom that spoke through the prophets of old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messianic Prophecy: The Prediction of the Fulfillment of Redemption Through the Messiah The present volume traces the Messianic idea in its development in the Old Testament Scriptures. It does not enter into the Messianic idea of the apocryphal books, or of the Apocalypses, or of the Jewish sects of the four centuries, in the midst of which the first advent occurred, because the Messianic idea of the Old Testament is complete in the canon of the Old Testament. The Messianic ideas of the later Jews have their proper place as an external historical frame in which to set the Messianic idea of Christ and His apostles. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christology of the Old Testament, Vol. 4: And a Commentary on the Messianic Predictions Who is it, who is here commissioned to feed the flock Very many of the earlier expositors assumed that these words were addressed, without the prophet's intervention, to the Angel of the Lord, who was essentially one with God Himself, in other words, to the Messiah, in whom, according to the teaching of the Old Testament, this Angel was eventually to appear. The fact that there is something forced, in the assumption that another person is introduced in this sudden manner, and without farther notice, is not sufficient to prove that the opinion is incorrect. The abrupt introduction of new persons, whose presence is merely indicated by their speeches and actions, is a thing Of frequent occurrence in the prophecies, and was a necessary result of the dramatic character of the prophetical writings. And there is the less ground for objecting to the sudden appearance of the Angel of the Lord in the present instance, from the fact that throughout the whole of the first part he is constantly repre sented as one of the persons employed. But a comparison of ver. 15 sqq. Is amply sufficient to overthrow this exposition. The person, who is referred to in these verses, must be the same as the subject of ver. 4 sqq. This is evident from the expression, take unto thee again the instruments of the evil shepherd. The word fir again is a proof that the person who takes the instruments of the evil shepherd in this case, is the very same as the person who took the instruments of the wicked shepherd in ver. 7 sqq. But the contents Of ver. 15 sqq. Do not apply in any way to the Angel of the Lord or the Messiah, as the supporters of this view are obliged to confess. It cannot, therefore, be to him that reference is made in the fourth and following verses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christology of the Old Testament, and a Commentary on the Predictions of the Messiah by the Prophets, Vol. 1: Containing the General Introduction and the Messianic Prophecies of Isaiah Tm: basis of the present work is firmed of prelections respecting the subject of which it treats. The author held them with peculiar pleasure, and with the comic, how necessary it is, and how salu tary it would he to Christianity and Theology, for the Old Testa ment to regain its ancient and well grounded rights; and the wish to contribute something to this in a wider circle also, induced him to revise and enlarge his work without intending however that all trap ces of the mode in which it originawd should be efi'aced. Although the author is conscious of having labored with bonfl and persevering diligence, yet he is very far fi'om not perceiving the imperfections of his work. It was the object here, where old and new theological prejudices stand in opposition to each other, to strike out a new path and in the very outset always to find the right course, and satisfy all requisitions, was a task diflicult in itself, and imposai ble Err him to perform. Yd he believes that the work, even in its prunt form, can serve in some manner to relieve the pressing neces sity, and at the same time prepare the way for the appearance of one more complete. He proceeds upon the principle, that before the erection of the new edifice, the rubbish must be thoroughly removed and the ground cleansed hence his work receives an irregular form and a temporal character; but perhaps the author of the more coup plete one, will give him some thanks, when he finds he can now commence the new structure without hindrance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Messianic Prophecy: A Presentation of the Progressively Revealed Thoughts of God on His Kingdom and His Messiah, Being Notes on the Messianic Passages of the Old Testament in Their Chronological Order The later prophets of heathenism were mere sign-interpreters, and true prophetism was ascribed mostly to prehistoric times. There was little or no vital connection between the prophet and historic events, as was the case in Israel, where the prophets were intensely historical and acted upon the course of national and inter national events.
