Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the genre of humour, this is a book about a television station located in the centre of Glasgow. Scottish Television Ltd. occupied an entire city block. It consisted of three studios plus one tiny continuity studio. All the administration offices were located there too. Sometimes it was a magical place to work. Other times it could drive you up the wall. I left in 1973 to spend a year at Granada Television. I never really settled in Manchester, and the opportunity of a floor manager job brought me back to STV in 1974. I was there from 19681973 and from 19742002. This book is written from the perspective of the factory floor, or perhaps that should be studio floor. There are no boardroom matters featured. Were not interested in share prices or profit margins. The narrative never goes higher than the second floor. I was usually present at the time the anecdotes occurred. If I wasnt, then I knew and trusted someone who was.

Book excerpt: Conflict, sadly, is part of our everyday life; experienced at home, in the workplace, on our TV screens. But is it an inevitable part of the fabric of our existence? In this volume, eight experts examine conflict at many levels, from the workings of genes to the evolution of galaxies. Evolutionary biologist David Haig examines why we disagree with ourselves, and psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen asks whether differences between the average male and female mind must necessarily lead to misunderstanding. Anthropologist Richard Wrangham explores why chimpanzees and humans have evolved to kill, while archaeologist Barry Cunliffe examines the roots of warfare. Political scientist Lisa Anderson analyses conflict in the Middle East, and broadcaster Kate Adie reflects on television reporting of war. The book concludes with industrial economist William Brown's discussion of conflict in labour relations, and an exploration of the creative and destructive effects of cosmic violence by physicist P. C. W. Davies.

Book excerpt: Curling legend Colleen Jones opens up about her extraordinary career and life Curling is possibly the most beloved sport across Canada, and Colleen Jones has been one of its brightest stars. She was only nineteen years old when she won her first provincial championship, and she became the youngest skip, at age twenty-two, ever to win the Canadian women's curling championship: the Tournament of Hearts. She went on to win it a total of six times, with an unprecedented four in a row in the early 2000s, along with her two world championships. No other women’s team has matched that record. Here, she tells the stories of her remarkable career—from the pure joy of the game to outworking her competition, year after year, always striving to be just a little bit better. But Colleen’s story is about more than a love of curling. As a champion at the pinnacle of her sport, as a popular CBC broadcaster, and as a mother of two, Colleen Jones seemed to have it all. Then a serious illness struck, and threatened ti rob her of all she had worked for. But Colleen, determined as ever, emerged with a renewed love of life and a powerful message about achieving authentic personal fulfillment. Throwing Rocks at Houses is a candid, charming and thoughtful story about rising to the top only to learn how easily it can all be taken away. Whether career, family, or personal health, her amazing journey reveals, more than anything, all that matters most in life.
