Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Works of Moliere, Vol. 3 of 3 The Miser was first represented on the 9th of September 1668, and was played nine times, though not consecutively. Two months afterwards, it was performed again, after it had been represented at Court; and then it was acted eleven times. It was evidently not a success. And this is the more astonishing, because the murder of the lieutenant erimirzel Tardieu and of his wife - two noted misers, who had been assassinated in their own house three years before - was as yet not forgotten, and the author could therefore calculate upon a kind Of curiosity to know how misers were represented on the stage, as well as on the intrinsic merit of the piece. Yet Moliere's play is crowded Wllh general traits, and not with particular allusions. He had to paint a vice as hateful in reality as it is disagreeable to be depicted on the stage; and he succeeded in doing this, whilst enlivening many scenes with the aid of funny characters or ridiculous incidents. He was then forty years old, she only about twenty. The marriage proved a most unhappy one; Moliere was deeply in love with his wife, but she gay, fond of flattery, and very fascinating. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Moliere, Vol. 3 Thus, all my authorities are French. I know that within the last twenty years some English writers have made a study of Moliere, and have brought out editions with notes of the chief of his plays. But as the greater part of my work was done out of England, where I had not access to these books, it is not altogether my fault that I have not been able to apply to them for assistance. I acknowledge very gladly my obligations to many French authors, for they have taught me much; and it is only natural to suppose that to some extent my thoughts have followed theirs. But I wish to say that I have not knowingly stolen their ideas and given them as my own. It is generally easy to quote the source of authority when dealing with facts, and I believe I have done so sufficiently. I trust I shall not be trespassing too far on the goodwill of French writers on Moliere if I assume that literary courtesy is willing to allow fair borrowing of facts and details when due acknowledgment is made of the loan. But literary courtesy does not extend its hospitality to robbery of ideas with silence about the theft. I hope I have not sinned in that respect. Book excerpt: Exploring each of Molière's 33 plays (including the divertissements) for its theatrical possibilities, Bermel deals with dramatic structures, settings, roles and their interactions, original productions, and outstanding recent stage performances in France, Britain, and the United States. His emphasis is theatrical rather than literary, philosophical, or biographical, although he necessarily brings these considerations to bear when discussing certain plays. Bermel introduces a new methodology, one featuring the type of scrutiny directors, actors, and designers apply to any play before and during rehearsal. Thus he studies the dramatic implications of each scene or part of a scene by noting which characters are present, which ones are absent, and why. He analyzes each role, explores interactions among characters, traces the significance of structure, considers how much information is provided and who provides it, and examines such notable background factors as setting, season, and scenic arrangement. Using this methodology, Bermel provides new interpretations of Molière's most celebrated plays and demonstrates that many of the less famous plays also deserve attention. Previous Molière critics have been conservative, especially in that they favor traditional stagings; Bermel, however, encourages new explorations of the plays. His main intention is to keep Molière alive and vital for present and future readers and audiences. Nowhere is this more apparent than in his attention to, and sympathy for, female characters and their points of view.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While eighteenth-century playwright and critic Gotthold Ephraim Lessing made numerous contributions in his lifetime to the theater, the text that best documents his dynamic and shifting views on dramatic theory is also that which continues to resonate with later generations – the Hamburg Dramaturgy (Hamburgische Dramaturgie, 1767–69). This collection of 104 short essays represents one of the eighteenth century’s most important critical engagements with the theater and its potential to promote humanistic discourse. Lessing’s essays are an immensely erudite, deeply engaged, witty, ironic, and occasionally scathing investigation of European theatrical culture, bolstered by deep analysis of Aristotelian dramatic theory and utopian visions of theater as a vehicle for human connection. This is the first complete English translation of Lessing's text, with extensive annotations that place the work in its historical context. For the first time, English-language readers can trace primary source references and link Lessing’s observations on drama, theory, and performance not only to the plays he discusses, but also to dramatic criticism and acting theory. This volume also includes three introductory essays that situate Lessing’s work both within his historical time period and in terms of his influence on Enlightenment and post-Enlightenment theater and criticism. The newly translated Hamburg Dramaturgy will speak to dramaturgs, directors, and humanities scholars who see theater not only for entertainment, but also for philosophical and political debate.
