Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winning poet Charles Simic introduces and translates one of Serbia’s most important contemporary poets Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Charles Simic has done more than anyone since Czeslaw Milosz to introduce English-language readers to the greatest modern Slavic poets. In Oranges and Snow, Simic continues this work with his translations of one of today's finest Serbian poets, Milan Djordjević. An encounter between two poets and two languages, this bilingual edition—the first selection of Djordjevic's work to appear in English—features Simic's translations and the Serbian originals on facing pages. Simic, a native Serbian speaker, has selected some forty-five of Djordjević's best poems and provides an introduction in which he discusses the poet's work, as well as the challenges of translation. Djordjević, who was born in Belgrade in 1954, is a poet who gives equal weight to imagination and reality. This book ranges across his entire career to date. His earliest poems can deal with something as commonplace as a bulb of garlic, a potato, or an overcoat fallen on the floor. Later poems, often dreamlike and surreal, recount his travels in Germany, France, and England. His recent poems are more autobiographical and realistic and reflect a personal tragedy. Confined to his house after being hit and nearly killed by a car while crossing a Belgrade street in 2007, the poet writes of his humble surroundings, the cats that come to his door, the birds he sees through his window, and the copies of one of his own books that he once burnt to keep warm. Whatever their subject, Djordjević's poems are beautiful, original, and always lyrical.

Book excerpt: How a Scotsman and his family lived the dream, making their vacation home permanent?and how the local neighbors helped them endure that "dream" I could hardly believe my eyes. A cold mantle of white was rapidly transforming our sunny paradise into a bizarre winterscape of citrus Christmas trees, cotton wool palms and snowball oranges. When the Kerr family leaves Scotland to grow oranges in a secluded valley on the island of Mallorca they are surprised to be greeted by the same freezing weather they left behind. They realize that their new orange farm is a bit of a lemon. Laughter, finds Peter Kerr, is the best medicine when faced with a local dish of rats and the live-chicken-down-a-chimney technique of household maintenance. But their Mallorcan neighbors help them adapt to their new life in this hilarious and revealing memoir, full of life and color, set against the breathtaking beauty of the Mediterranean.

Book excerpt: It's the stuff of dreams. A Scottish family gives up relative sanity and security to go and grow oranges for a living in a secluded valley in the mountains of Mallorca. But dreams, as everyone knows, have a nasty habit of not turning out quite as intended. Being greeted by a freak snowstorm is only the first of many surprises and experiences, and it isn't long before they realise that they have been sold a bit of a lemon of an orange farm by the wily previous owners. However, laughter is the best medicine and a colourful set of Mallorcan neighbours restores the family's faith in human nature and help them adapt to a new and unexpectedly testing life in this deceptively simple idyll of rural Spain...

The Mallorcan experience comes to an end with a farewell fiesta for neighbours and friends, full of comic shenanigans but tinged with sadness. But now begins the return-to-Scotland adventure, and what a cultural shock is in store. Welcomed back by family, the Kerrs make plans to start a deer farm on a remote hillside, the beginning of a period of challenges and change, of buying and restoring houses in the lovely Scottish countryside. Meanwhile, Peter explores Scotland with fresh eyes, visiting such places as the 'Biarritz of the North' where Robert Louis Stevenson used to holiday, and giving us an insider's view of the world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo. There's never a dull moment in the Kerr household.

Book excerpt: Everyone has a book in them, they say. Having gone through the process of extracting a masterpiece from your head what happens next? In most cases the book will end up in a desk drawer as a pile of papers or inside a computer. But that's not what you want, is it? You wrote it to get published. You want to see your name in print, to go into bookshops and see your book on the shelves. You want to feel that moment of pride when you see someone on the bus reading your book. The concept that a good book will always find a publisher is outdated and over-simplistic. The truth is that most writers remain unpublished because they pay attention only to the quality of their writing. Publishers are business people. Their job is to make money from selling books. They know that high quality writing alone isn't always enough to make a profitable book, so when choosing which manuscripts to sign up for publication they think about many more elements than just the words on the page. After 15 years in the book industry, Stewart Ferris has identified all of the crucial factors that publishers consider besides good writing. How to Get Published reveals for the first time these inside secrets and provides tactics that any writer can use to create the perfect conditions for their own 'lucky break' to happen. *Why books get accepted *How publishing works *How to find a publisher *What to put in a submission *How to write a sizzling synopsis *10 ways to leapfrog other submissions *Sending multiple submissions *Easily avoidable reasons why books get rejected *16 crucial factors that publishers consider when deciding what to publish *And much more! Stewart Ferris has published 500 books, rejected 10,000 submissions, and is the author of more than 20 books.

Book excerpt: Having battled and succumbed to the manana pace of rural Mallorca, spring sees Peter Kerr and his family relaxing into a supposedly simpler way of life, growing oranges on their little farm, Ca's Mayoral. However, even after the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of their initiation, Spain has not yet finished with them. Embarrassing subtleties of the language, brushes with the local police, the unfortunate outcome of a drinking session; surprises are aplenty to test the resolve, stamina, and, perhaps more importantly, the sense of humor of this venturesome emigre family. Their eccentric and colorful new friends are always on hand to help out—for better or worse—and add spice to this account of tranquilo life.
