Book excerpt: A practical, deeply reported survival guide for the age of AI, written by the New York Times tech columnist who has introduced millions to the promise and pitfalls of artificial intelligence. “Artificial intelligence can be terrifying, but Kevin Roose provides a clear, compelling strategy for surviving the next wave of technology with our jobs—and souls—intact.”—Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit It’s time to get real about AI. After decades of hype and sci-fi fantasies, AI—artificial intelligence—is leaping out of research labs and into the center of our lives. Millions of people now use tools like ChatGPT and DALL-E 2 to write essays, create art and finish coding projects. AI programs are already beating humans in fields like law, medicine and entertainment, and they’re getting better every day. But AI doesn’t just threaten our jobs. It shapes our entire human experience, steering our behavior and influencing our choices about which TV shows to watch, which clothes to buy, and which politicians to vote for. And while many experts argue about whether a robot apocalypse is near, one critical question has gone unanswered: In a world where AI is ascendant, how can humans survive and thrive? In Futureproof: 9 Rules for Humans in the Age of Automation, New York Times technology columnist Kevin Roose shares the secrets of people and organizations that have successfully navigated waves of technological change, and explains what skills are necessary to stay ahead of the curve today, with lessons like • Be surprising, social, and scarce • Resist machine drift • Leave handprints • Demote your devices • Treat AI like a chimp army Roose rejects the conventional wisdom that in order to compete with AI, we have to become more like robots ourselves—hyper-efficient, data-driven workhorses. Instead, he says, we should focus on being more human, and doing the kinds of creative, inspiring, and meaningful things even the most advanced algorithms can’t do.

Book excerpt: No past. No future. Only now. Originally a self-publishing success launched on N. Frank Daniels's MySpace page, the novel Futureproof tells the story of Luke and his friends as they navigate Atlanta’s subculture of delinquents. In short order, the seemingly harmless high from his first cigarette sends Luke on a downward spiral that ends only after years of self-abuse. It is an extreme cautionary tale told with sensitivity, ferocity, and grit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: News coverage is often described as the “first draft of history.” From the publication in 1690 of the first American newspaper, Publick Occurrences, to the latest tweet, news has been disseminated to inform its audience about what is going on in the world. But the preservation of news content has had its technological, legal, and organizational challenges. Over the centuries, as new means of finding, producing, and distributing news were developed, the methods used to ensure future generations’ access changed, and new challenges for news content preservation arose. This book covers the history of news preservation (or lack thereof), the decisions that helped ensure (or doom) its preservation, and the unique preservation issues that each new form of media brought. All but one copy of Publick Occurrences were destroyed by decree. The wood-pulp based newsprint used for later newspapers crumbled to dust. Early microfilm disintegrates to acid and decades of microfilmed newspapers have already dissolved in their storage drawers. Early radio and television newscasts were rarely captured and when they were, the technological formats for accessing the tapes are long superseded. Sounds and images stored on audio and videotapes fade and become unreadable. The early years of web publication by news organizations were lost by changes in publishing platforms and a false security that everything on the Internet lives forever. In 50 or 100 years, what will we be able to retrieve from today’s news output? How will we tell the story of this time and place? Will we have better access to news produced in 1816 than news produced in 2016? These are some of the questions Future-Proofing the News aims to answer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This world has changed. The future has changed. Childhood is changing. Raising children has never been more challenging - or potentially rewarding. It is becoming increasingly obvious that the world into which our young children will enter as adults, somewhere between 2020 and 2030, will be nothing like the world their parents grew up in, or even the world we currently inhabit. We need a better understanding of the world of the future in order to prepare our children and to 'future-proof' them. Future-proof Your Child is a very different kind of parenting book. It contains many useful, practical hints and tips but also focuses on the context for parenting and child development today. It convinces 21st-century parents of the need to change their approach to parenting future generations and is relevant, accessible, practical and inspirational. Future-proof Your Child highlights the critical importance of making choices, having conversations and consciously connecting with tomorrow's children today.

Book excerpt: From viral social media phenomenon Nicholas Crown, who's "Rich vs. Really Rich" series has grown a following of over 3 million across social media platforms, comes a modern formula for building wealth in today's economy based on ten points that include habitual kindness, optimizing quality of life over dollar amounts, and eight other revolutionary and timely principles. Really Rich is a timely work of prescriptive finance by social media influencer and entrepreneur Nicholas Crown. Crown shows established, and future generations of businesspeople that without the social grease of kindness, coupled with a financial model that views the world as a "non-zero-sum game," immeasurable value would be robbed from society and innovation would grind to a halt. In Really Rich, Crown provides readers with an original, ten-point formula for building wealth and happiness: 1. Create Value: Get rich by making someone else's life easier 2. Understand that time is priceless 3. Optimize for quality of life, not a dollar amount 4. Kindness is an accelerant to wealth 5. Humility is the boundary between rich and really rich 6. Rudeness robs value from society 7. The market decides what's valuable 8. Iterate until someone starts clapping 9. Obsession with status impedes growth 10. Lean on creativity to become future-proof Really Rich offers an appealing message for a young personal finance audience. With more than 2M+ followers across multiple platforms, Crown encourages his mostly Gen Z and Millennial audience to embrace three foundational points: (1) humility, rather than hoarding or cutthroat competition; (2) iteration, or calmly moving through a series of failures until one works, is the cornerstone of success; and (3) the world, due to continuing advances in technology and communication, is now a non-zero-sum game in which everyone can contribute to the growth of an ever-expanding economic "pie" without taking resources from another.
