Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand "Men of Mark in the World of Sport in New Zealand" should be an appropriate title for a work containing the photos and biographical sketches of representative men, most of whom are deeply interested in racing, hunting, and other sports. To make this book representative, it was necessary to take the leading actors in all departments, but it is not pretended that the list has been exhausted, the field is so large. Connecting links will be found between the old racing world and the new in its pages. There are many who have helped, or are assisting, to make turf history, whom the Editor would have been pleased to add to the collection, but a few, from excessive modesty, declined; others were negligent, and had to be left out, and a few have been omitted unintentionally. To have included all would have been a much heavier undertaking than a busy man could accomplish. The book has, however, run into greater dimensions than was promised at the outset, and contains about 250 illustrations. Considerable difficulty was experienced in getting many of the photos, and information. The Editor desires to express his sincere thanks to those who so cordially responded, and others who have promised support, and trusts that any shortcomings may be overlooked. He would add, in conclusion, that he has received every consideration from his publishers, the Brett Printing and Publishing Company, who have done the whole of the mechanical work in connection with the illustrations and the issue of the book. Over this time, world-wide participation in sport has been shaped by economic developments, communication and transportation innovations, declining racism, diplomacy, political ideologies, feminization, democratization, as well as increasing professionalization and commercialization. Sport has now become both a global cultural force and one of the deepest ways in which individual nations express their myths, beliefs, values, traditions and realities. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Sport presents the first comprehensive history from classical antiquity to today, covering all forms and aspects of sport and its ever-changing social, cultural, political, and economic context and impact. The themes covered in each volume are the purpose of sport; sporting time and sporting space; products, training and technology; rules and order; conflict and accommodation; inclusion, exclusion and segregation; minds, bodies and identities; representation. Steven A. Riess is Professor Emeritus at Northeastern Illinois University, USA. Volume 6 in the Cultural History of Sport set General Editors: Wray Vamplew, Mark Dyreson, and John McClelland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this practical analysis of sports law in New Zealand deals with the regulation of sports activity by both public authorities and private sports organizations. The growing internationalization of sports inevitably increases the weight of global regulation, yet each country maintains its own distinct regime of sports law and its own national and local sports organizations. Sports law at a national or organizational level thus gains a growing relevance in comparative law. The book describes and discusses both state-created rules and autonomous self-regulation regarding the variety of economic, social, commercial, cultural, and political aspects of sports activities. Self- regulation manifests itself in the form of by-laws, and encompasses organizational provisions, disciplinary rules, and rules of play. However, the trend towards more professionalism in sports and the growing economic, social and cultural relevance of sports have prompted an increasing reliance on legal rules adopted by public authorities. This form of regulation appears in a variety of legal areas, including criminal law, labour law, commercial law, tax law, competition law, and tort law, and may vary following a particular type or sector of sport. It is in this dual and overlapping context that such much-publicized aspects as doping, sponsoring and media, and responsibility for injuries are legally measured. This monograph fills a gap in the legal literature by giving academics, practitioners, sports organizations, and policy makers access to sports law at this specific level. Lawyers representing parties with interests in New Zealand will welcome this very useful guide, and academics and researchers will appreciate its value in the study of comparative sports law.
