Book excerpt: Overwhelmingly, Black teenage girls are negatively represented in national and global popular discourses, either as being “at risk” for teenage pregnancy, obesity, or sexually transmitted diseases, or as helpless victims of inner city poverty and violence. Such popular representations are pervasive and often portray Black adolescents' consumer and leisure culture as corruptive, uncivilized, and pathological. In She's Mad Real, Oneka LaBennett draws on over a decade of researching teenage West Indian girls in the Flatbush and Crown Heights sections of Brooklyn to argue that Black youth are in fact strategic consumers of popular culture and through this consumption they assert far more agency in defining race, ethnicity, and gender than academic and popular discourses tend to acknowledge. Importantly, LaBennett also studies West Indian girls' consumer and leisure culture within public spaces in order to analyze how teens like China are marginalized and policed as they attempt to carve out places for themselves within New York's contested terrains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Stage IV to Center Stage is a story of extraordinary courage, strength, and deep spirituality. Denise DeSimones journey began the moment she opened her eyes in a post-op ward after a routine biopsy to determine the pathology of the lump on her neck and was told, You have cancer. A very aggressive cancer in your throat and neck, and you need to move on this immediately. Given three months to live because of stage IV throat and neck cancer (August 2005), to singing the National Anthem before a Red Sox game at Fenway Park in Boston (July 2007), to riding her bicycle eighty-five miles in one day to raise money for childrens cancer research with the Pan Mass Challenge (August 2007) all in less than two years is proof that the unexpected can be achieved. Denise approached cancer differently than most people do. She chose not to battle, cancer; she chose to embrace it and allow it to become her teacher and her sage. Naming her cancer PINan acronym for Pain in the Neck, Denise entered into a dialogue with PIN, gave it a pen, and gave it permission to teach her the lessons she needed to learn. The lessons were rich and enlightening. She learned something deeply critical to healing: self-love. When we love ourselves, we dont want to battle anything. When we love ourselves, we allow our vibration to attract life at a higher frequency: a frequency that promotes healing on all levelsemotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Denise learned that self love is the all-time greatest healer.

Book excerpt: The holidays are served up with some spice in this small-town romance featuring a woman who must maintain a secret identity and the man who begins falling for her. This Christmas, all Mayor Kevin Hadley wants is to give his five-year-old son whatever his heart desires. Only Tad has fallen head over holly for his pretty, sweet-as-sugarplum teacher. When attraction sparks between Kevin and Mary Margaret, the single dad thinks she may be the answer to his and his son's dreams. But after Mary Margaret reluctantly turns him down, Kevin decides it's time to embark on a new campaign -- one for Mary Margaret's heart. Mary Margaret Sneed usually spends her holiday baking and caroling with her students. Yet this year, she's swapped shortbread and sleigh bells for a second job to pay off her late husband's debts. Mary Margaret would love to go tree trimming with Kevin and his son, but she won't risk his political future with her controversial side gig. Only the town's meddling matchmakers have determined there's nothing a little mistletoe can't fix . . . and if the Widows Club has their way, Mary Margaret and Kevin may just get the best Christmas gift of all this year. Includes a bonus novella by Hope Ramsay!
