Book excerpt: Motivation, persistence and perseverance are the distinct traits of determined and dedicated individuals who can make things happen. It's always possible, even when the task is awesome -- transforming the mindset of human beings. Located in India's capital, New Delhi, Tihar is one of the largest prisons in the world. Within a prison complex of over 200 acres are housed over 9,700 inmates -- men, women, adolescents, children; Indians and foreigners. They comprise unconvicted alleged offenders, convicts and remandees. Tihar was a limping, languishing institution, condemned by the media, and its inmates were isolated from the community, exploited, used and abused, yet 'housed'. Dr Kiran Bedi was appointed Inspector General of Tihar Prison in 1993. She brought about fundamental changes, giving a human face to the administrative structure and creating an exemplary system covering every possible aspect of prison management. The whole objective was to collectively and individually manage the transition from a moribund system to a responsive and sensitive administration. Hence her efforts unfolded the process of reformation involving prison administration, prisoners and the community, toward one common goal -- Correction through a collective approach. Dr Bedi's account is enhanced by input from the prisoners themselves, expressing their feelings in letters and sketches, in petitions and poetry. This book is a graphic portrayal of an holistic process of conversion, a metamorphosis from criminality to humanity, achieved within a restrictive legal framework.

I am illustrating a select few for you, drawn from my carefully documented archives. If the department did not have the resources I sought them from outside. I was never shy of asking for anything that would benefit the people to be served. Because they needed answers, not excuses. For all these solutions, I had the support of some of my seniors, team members and juniors. They were excited about the novelty and ease of doing their duty. They, equally, got the credits and due recognition. Many of them saw growth in their new learning. This sowed the seeds for empowered and creative leadership.

For more information on her please visit website www.kiranbedi.org, on her twitter handle @thekiranbedi or connect with her on her weekly internet radio program on www.radiowalla.in Corruption has seeped so deeply into the systems of governance in India that the common man has lost faith in every administrative process. This wide spread disease of corruption can only be cured by a total revamp of its political, investigative and prosecuting systems. What we are seeing all around us today is nothing but loot. Loot of very high scale to the extent we can’t count the number of zeros. And as this started to unfold with the Commonwealth Games exposure, it got my goat. I started to be a part of a collective voice which became louder by the day. At times very shrill, not by choice, but by compelling circumstances. But all for one common cause---a well governed India--- a better India which makes us all prosperous and our next generation secure. This is the spirit behind this collection. If the corrupt can unite for their vested interest, why we, the victims, not unite for our own selves? Be the change! Be The Change fighTing CorrupTion Kiran Bedi Kiran Bedi has been a courageous voice on police and prison reforms, women empowerment, serving the underserved communities, leadership issues in management and governance, now more focussed on corruption. She writes as she experiences, speaks from her heart and reaches out to the audience respecting their needs. Here is a compilation of some of the selected writings and speeches, in which she focussed on ‘Corruption’. These speeches and writings have a perennial inspirational value. "

Book excerpt: "From the holy city of Amritsar, India, To the Mecca of International Peace, The United Nations… an inspiring journey of the first woman in the Indian Police Service! What a national revolution it would be if each one of us were to self-police! Policing is the Power to Correct, the Power to Prevent, and the Power to get things done. It is the most effective protector of human rights just as it could be its worst violator” – this was a part of my acceptance speech on receiving the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1994. “Police services in India are getting tougher by the day. They can be made simpler and effective only if the paths of truth and nonviolence are followed. There is a desperate need to lead the services the right way – with vision and commitment. Unless the service wants to be led by Generals who have no army, leadership must come from within the service and be groomed down the line”. Kiran Bedi in her usual refreshingly candid style, shares wideranging issues which have angered, inspired, or fascinated her. Through her matter of fact style of writing, she draws her readers into situations that they may either not have access to or may tend to ignore. Indian Police Issues… As I See… is a persistent effort by the author to encourage greater awareness about various social the hope to invoke, provoke, and inspire readers to heightened levels of sensitivity, participation, and response.
