Book excerpt: In Heritage Style, Selina Lake celebrates the new nostalgic mood in interiors, using vintage and inherited furniture and other accessories in a fresh, original fashion. Our homes are more important to us than ever before, and heritage style harks back to the reassuring comfort of traditional interiors. Paneling, wallpaper, floral fabrics, and heritage paint colors provide a backdrop for house plants, artworks, and contemporary crafts, while upholstered and wicker furniture, pretty decorative detailing, and plump throw pillows feel warm, welcoming, and familiar. It’s not only a comforting style, but also a sustainable one, built around pre-owned and vintage pieces sourced at online auctions or on Instagram and given a new lease of life in modern homes. Heritage Style shows how to create a home that feels both modern and nostalgic at the same time—inviting, easy to live in, and full of intriguing personal touches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic architecture has enriched design with a wide variety of structural shapes, including among others, unique arches, a wide variety of vaults and domes, which allow for new forms to be developed. This volume deals with the design of many types of buildings in Islamic countries, including not only the better known public buildings like mosques, mausoleums, citadels and forts, but also houses and gardens, engineering works such as bridges and dams, irrigation systems and many others which have also had a profound impact on society. There is much to learn from past experiences to arrive at solutions that are environmentally sound and sustainable in the long term. As conventional energy resources become scarce, the Islamic design heritage can offer invaluable lessons on how to deal in an efficient manner with cases of hard and extreme environments. Traditional architecture and urban environments in most Islamic countries are now being eroded by overemphasis on a global type of architecture and city planning. Consequently, many regions are losing their identity. The included research reviews these developments in the light of what the classical Islamic urban designs and architectures have to offer modern society.

Book excerpt: "Society of Architectural Historians Spiro Kostof Book Award, Honorable Mention, 2018" The conservation of old Sanaa is a major cultural heritage initiative that began in the 1980's under the auspices of UNESCO; it continues today, led by local agencies and actors. In contrast to other parts of the world where conservation was introduced at a later date to remediate the effects of modernization, in Yemen the two processes have been more or less concurrent. This has resulted in a paradox: unlike many other countries in the Middle East that abandoned traditional construction practices long ago, in Yemen these practices have not died out. Builders and craftsmen still work in 'traditional' construction, and see themselves as caretakers of the old city. At the same time, social forms that shaped the built fabric persist in both the old city and the new districts. Yemenis, in effect, are not separated from their heritage by an historical divide. What does it mean to conserve in a place where the 'historic past' is, in some sense, still alive? How must international agencies and consultants readjust theory and practice as they interact with living representatives of this historic past? And what are the implications of the case of Sanaa for conservation in general? Building a World Heritage City addresses these questions and also fosters greater cultural understanding of a little known, but geopolitically important, part of the world that is often portrayed exclusively in terms of unrest and political turmoil.

Born in Rotterdam and educated in Europe, Ghea is one of Indonesia's most famous fashion designers, renowned for having promoted a renaissance in Indonesia's ethnic textile tradition. After graduating from a fashion college in London, she returned to her country and established her fashion-design studio in 1980, and she has since opened several ateliers and boutiques in Jakarta. Her mission: to develop, celebrate, and promote her country's fashion heritage. Her textiles make strong use of folklore, including the Jumputan tie-dyed fabrics (the Pelangi Palembang) that have become her hallmark. A role model for women, entrepreneurs, designers, and visionary people, Ghea went international early in her career. Since her very first forays into fashion, Ghea has been instrumental in establishing the association of fashion designers (IPMI) in her country for the professionalization of fashion design. Ghea has given Indonesian fashion worldwide attention, showcasing her collections in Paris, Cannes, Marrakech, Kuala Lumpur, London, and Milan. Her shows have been attended by international celebrities, and she has often been featured in major fashion magazines, like Harper's Bazaar and Prestige Indonesia. This is an inspirational book for many young designers who need to acquire the know-how to sustain their own creative practice.
