Book excerpt: The debut novel from the author of Under Your Skin, Remember Me This Way, and A Life With Me, a page-turning and comedic story about a woman on the brink. Maggie Owen has given up her day job and resigned herself to a life of playground moms and soiled clothing—until the day she runs into Claire Masterson. Claire was the girl at school Maggie always wanted to be, and (surprise, surprise) it's as if nothing has changed. Claire still has everything—and Maggie's life, as the mother of two young boys, is utter chaos. But when it seems that Claire knows a little too much about Maggie's boyfriend, Jake, Maggie starts thinking the unthinkable, and the lengths to which she goes to uncover the truth and regain her confidence throw her life—and her relationship with Jake—for a loop. Funny, smart and self-deprecating, this propulsive novel questions what our choices mean and whether we ever actually grow up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do You Have an Unhealthy Relationship with Food or Your Body? Does every woman have an eating disorder? It's a bold question but one that must be asked. Why is it that today's women--successful students, career women, wives, and mothers--are struggling more than ever with food and weight? Even those who don't suffer from a clinical eating disorder seem to have some sort of issue around food and weight. We live in a culture of culinary abundance but are taught to do whatever it takes to shrink our flesh. From an early age, women are bombarded with messages regarding what size and shape they should be, a campaign that takes a toll on their relationship with food, their self-esteem, and their health. It's hard to go a day without seeing an advertisement for a new diet product, overhearing a conversation about weight between colleagues or a plan of attack between friends as they brace themselves for dining out, or reading a headline about our nation's obesity crisis. Book excerpt: A vivid portrait of African American life in today’s urban South that uses food to explore the complex interactions of race and class Getting Something to Eat in Jackson uses food—what people eat and how—to explore the interaction of race and class in the lives of African Americans in the contemporary urban South. Joseph Ewoodzie Jr. examines how “foodways”—food availability, choice, and consumption—vary greatly between classes of African Americans in Jackson, Mississippi, and how this reflects and shapes their very different experiences of a shared racial identity. Ewoodzie spent more than a year following a group of socioeconomically diverse African Americans—from upper-middle-class patrons of the city’s fine-dining restaurants to men experiencing homelessness who must organize their days around the schedules of soup kitchens. Ewoodzie goes food shopping, cooks, and eats with a young mother living in poverty and a grandmother working two jobs. He works in a Black-owned BBQ restaurant, and he meets a man who decides to become a vegan for health reasons but who must drive across town to get tofu and quinoa. Ewoodzie also learns about how soul food is changing and why it is no longer a staple survival food. Throughout, he shows how food choices influence, and are influenced by, the racial and class identities of Black Jacksonians. By tracing these contemporary African American foodways, Getting Something to Eat in Jackson offers new insights into the lives of Black Southerners and helps challenge the persistent homogenization of blackness in American life.
