Book excerpt: Structures cannot be created without engineering theory, and design rules have existed from the earliest times for building Greek temples, Roman aqueducts and Gothic cathedrals -- and later, for steel skyscrapers and the frames for aircraft. This book is, however, not concerned with the description of historical feats, but with the way the structural engineer sets about his business. Galileo, in the seventeenth century, was the first to introduce recognizably modem science into the calculation of structures; he determined the breaking strength of beams. In the eighteenth century engineers moved away from this 'ultimate load' approach, and early in the nineteenth century a formal philosophy of design had been established -- a structure should remain elastic, with a safety factor on stress built into the analysis. This philosophy held sway for over a century, until the first tests on real structures showed that the stresses confidently calculated by designers could not actually be measured in practice. Structural engineering has taken a completely different path since the middle of the twentieth century; plastic analysis reverts to Galileo's objective of the calculation of ultimate strength, and powerful new theorems now underpin the activities of the structural engineer. This book deals with a technical subject, but the presentation is completely non-mathematical. It makes available to the engineer, the architect and the general reader the principles of structural design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Earthquake Engineering is designed to be the authoritative and comprehensive reference covering all major aspects of the science of earthquake engineering, specifically focusing on the interaction between earthquakes and infrastructure. The encyclopedia comprises approximately 300 contributions. Since earthquake engineering deals with the interaction between earthquake disturbances and the built infrastructure, the emphasis is on basic design processes important to both non-specialists and engineers so that readers become suitably well informed without needing to deal with the details of specialist understanding. The encyclopedia’s content provides technically-inclined and informed readers about the ways in which earthquakes can affect our infrastructure and how engineers would go about designing against, mitigating and remediating these effects. The coverage ranges from buildings, foundations, underground construction, lifelines and bridges, roads, embankments and slopes. The encyclopedia also aims to provide cross-disciplinary and cross-domain information to domain-experts. This is the first single reference encyclopedia of this breadth and scope that brings together the science, engineering and technological aspects of earthquakes and structures.

It consists of urban design and landscape architecture. Some of the major constructions that fall under this domain are dams, canals, roads, bridges, etc. This book elucidates new techniques of civil engineering and their applications in a multidisciplinary approach. It strives to provide a fair idea about this discipline and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances within this field. It is meant for students who are looking for an elaborate reference text on civil engineering and its related fields.

It studies the construction and maintenance of buildings, roads, canals and dams. The sub-disciplines of civil engineering are materials science and engineering, environmental engineering, earthquake engineering, coastal engineering, structural engineering, water resources engineering, etc. As this field is emerging at a rapid pace, the contents of this book will help the readers understand the modern concepts and applications of the subject. For someone with an interest and eye for detail, this book covers the most significant topics in the field of civil engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the best-selling tradition of the Handbook of Structural Engineering, this second edition is a comprehensive reference to the broad spectrum of structural engineering, encapsulating the theoretical, practical, and computational aspects of the field. The contributors cover traditional and innovative approaches to analysis, design, and rehabilitation. New topics include: fundamental theories of structural dynamics; advanced analysis; wind- and earthquake-resistant design; design of prestressed structures; high-performance steel, concrete, and fiber-reinforced polymers; semirigid frame structures; structural bracing; and structural design for fire safety.
