Book excerpt: "To you, blessed soul whom the Lord draws to the desert to speak to your heart; to you alone who chose it as unique, better: that He chose as host of praise forever! Do you want to burn in front of His adorable Face like a very pure wax? Do you want, like the Cherubim, like the Seraphim, to be irradiated with His clarity, ablaze with His love, to be for Him, in your turn, only light and charity? Consent to forget the world, the universe and yourself. If you hesitate to lose your life and lose it, do not go further. The following will not enlighten you. If the abyss tempts you, beg the Lord to envelop you in solitude; to throw you into the silence that it inhabits, fills, where it manifests. For yourself, try to live like this. As much as you can, in the exact obedience and perfect charity, you will avoid these four things, major obstacles to interior silence, and which make habitual contemplation impossible-interior noise, interior discussions, obsessions, concern for yourself. This done, you will have crossed the doors of silence"--

In her achingly funny, heartbreaking childhood memoir, Catherine Therese takes the reader inside her head, and upside down on a unique emotional rollercoaster from picking her belly button in her backyard in Black town, pulling her hair out standing on her head, to the stage; hiding inside her wardrobe interpreting silence, to the bedroom of a boy with a half a thumb and to the labour ward, in an unforgettable story of remembering, forgetting, pretending, of becoming who you are.

But how do you defend against something you don't believe in? The wizard Adramal is racing home to Kyer Altamar to fight Zorian. She drank from a magical well and received a vision that claims to reveal her purpose in life. Clues in the vision suggest it may contain knowledge that will help in the battle... if she can crack its code in time. Meanwhile, Lelsarin, the immortal being who lives in Adramal's head, has her own ideas about how to deal with Zorian, and keeping those around her alive doesn't seem to be a priority. How far is she willing to go to rid the world of one God?

Immerse yourself in the silent realm of mystics, musicians, poets, and pilgrims of every path. These are our companions, as we explore the nuanced vocabulary of the worlds of silences and join in the conversation with a new voice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Greece, the spoken word connoted power, whether in the free speech accorded to citizens or in the voice of the poet, whose song was thought to know no earthly bounds. But how did silence fit into the mental framework of a society that valued speech so highly? Here Silvia Montiglio provides the first comprehensive investigation into silence as a distinctive and meaningful phenomenon in archaic and classical Greece. Arguing that the notion of silence is not a universal given but is rather situated in a complex network of associations and values, Montiglio seeks to establish general principles for understanding silence through analyses of cultural practices, including religion, literature, and law. Unlike the silence of a Christian before an ineffable God, which signifies the uselessness of words, silence in Greek religion paradoxically expresses the power of logos--for example, during prayer and sacrifice, it serves as a shield against words that could offend the gods. Montiglio goes on to explore silence in the world of the epic hero, where words are equated with action and their absence signals paralysis or tension in power relationships. Her other examples include oratory, a practice in which citizens must balance their words with silence in very complex ways in order to show that they do not abuse their right to speak. Inquiries into lyric poetry, drama, medical writings, and historiography round out this unprecedented study, revealing silence as a force in its own right.
