Book excerpt: For those with an interest in American history and sporting, here's a fascinating, authoritative look at some of the most famous guns of the Wild West, drawn from the collection of the Cody Firearms Museum of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming. Known as “the Smithsonian of the West,” this grand museum complex is home to many treasures related to the history, art, and ethnology of the American West. Following the success of our previous Courage title The Civil War Catalog, another copiously illustrated hardcover format focused on historic weapons and equipment, this beautifully photographed new volume showcases more than 50 of the actual weapons used by some of the most famous western legends, from Lewis and Clark to Buffalo Bill Cody, Theodore Roosevelt, and John “Jeremiah” Johnson.

Book excerpt: Cody Wilson, a self-described crypto-anarchist and rogue thinker, combines the story of the production of the first ever 3D printable gun with a philosophical manifesto that gets to the heart of the twenty-first century debate over the freedom of information and ideas. Reminiscent of Steal This Book by Abbie Hoffman, Cody Wilson has written a philosophical guide through the digital revolution. Deflecting interference from the State Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the story of Defense Distributed -- where Wilson's employees work against all odds to defend liberty and the right to access arms through the production of 3D printed firearms -- takes us across continents, into dusty warehouses and high rise condominiums, through television studios, to the Texas desert, and beyond.

Book excerpt: From Buffalo Bill to Wild Bill and from Chief Joseph to Geronimo, the most famous guns in the West and the history behind them More than a few of the actual guns once in the hands of the heroes and villains of America’s Old West still exist, housed in a dozen museums across the country—from the Model 1866 .44-40 that Chief Joseph famously surrendered to General Miles to Wild Bill Hickok’s Colt Model 1851 revolvers; from Buffalo Bill’s .50 caliber breechloading needlegun nicknamed “Lucrezia Borgia” to John Wesley Hardin’s 1860 model .44 SA revolvers. Famous Firearms of the Old West follows the life stories of a dozen actual pistols, rifles, and shotguns instrumental in shaping America’s history—using them as entrées into the lives of the shooters themselves. This is a vivid portrait of famous Western characters, paired with the guns they used to make themselves famous or, as the case may be, infamous. It is a must for anyone interested in the history and lore of the Wild West, gun hobbyists, and tourists seeking a museum experience with a difference.

It charts the British love affair with the 'flipped' bullpup rifle and machine gun - weapons with their firing mechanism positioned behind the trigger - from a faltering start in the Edwardian period, through the controversy of the NATO rifle trials, to the troubled history of the current SA80 family.

Book excerpt: Designed in 1942, Britain's innovative Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank (PIAT) provided British and Commonwealth troops with a much-needed means of taking on Germany's formidable Panzers. Replacing the inadequate Boys anti-tank rifle, it was conceived in the top-secret World War II research and development organization known colloquially as 'Churchill's Toyshop', alongside other ingenious weapons such as the sticky bomb, the limpet mine and the time-pencil fuse. Unlike the more famous US bazooka, the PIAT had its roots in something simpler than rocket science. Operated from the shoulder, the PIAT was a spigot mortar which fired a heavy high-explosive bomb, with its main spring soaking up the recoil. The PIAT had a limited effective range. Troops required nerves of steel to get close enough to an enemy tank to ensure a direct hit, often approaching to within 50ft of the target, and no fewer than six Victoria Crosses were won during World War II by soldiers operating PIATs. A front-line weapon in every theatre of the conflict in which Commonwealth troops fought, from Europe to the Far East, the PIAT remained in service after 1945, seeing action during the Greek Civil War, the Arab–Israeli conflict and the Korean War. This illustrated study combines detailed research with expert analysis to reveal the full story of the design, development and deployment of this revolutionary weapon.
