Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 6, 2013, Father Mina Abood was martyred. In this book, you will follow along the mere thirty-eight-year-long journey spent by this honored presbyter on the earth. It begins with his early life and humble beginnings as a servant in his home-city of Aswan, and later in the suburbs of bustling Cairo. It then proceeds to describe his mysterious call to the priesthood in war-torn Sinai. The compelling story culminates in a valorous witness to the Christian faith, and a brutal, yet triumphant, martyrdom. But the story does not end there, as you become acquainted with the esteem that the Lord God holds for His martyrs, manifested in the events following Father Mina's death. The hope is that all may be encouraged to model the resilient faith of this contemporary martyr, who persistently emphasized, "My true home is in heaven."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping book tells the largely unknown story of longtime Russian dissident Alexander Ogorodnikov -- from Communist youth to religious dissident, in the Gulag and back again. Ogorodnikov's courage has touched people from every walk of life, including world leaders such as Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and Margaret Thatcher. In the 1970s Ogorodnikov performed a feat without precedent in the Soviet Union: he organized thousands of Protestant, Orthodox, and Catholic Christians in an underground group called the Christian Seminar. When the KGB gave him the option to leave the Soviet Union rather than face the Gulag, he firmly declined because he wanted to change "his" Russia from the inside out. His willingness to sacrifice himself and be imprisoned meant leaving behind his wife and newborn child. Ogorodnikov spent nine years in the Gulag, barely surviving the horrors he encountered there. Despite KGB harassment and persecution after his release, he refused to compromise his convictions and went on to found the first free school in the Soviet Union, the first soup kitchen, and the first private shelter for orphans, among other accomplishments. Today this man continues to carry on his struggle against government detainments and atrocities, often alone. Readers will be amazed and inspired by Koenraad De Wolf's authoritative account of Ogorodnikov's life and work.

Book excerpt: Gbolahan Olabode came to America in search of a better life. As he worked to put himself through Philadelphia’s Temple University, he was arrested and imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. Though there was a great deal of evidence that he was innocent, the Police Officers and Detectives covered it up, hoping to get a conviction. Soon the truth was revealed, and Mr. Olabode was released, but he did not feel that justice had been done. In 1993 he sued the City of Philadelphia and the Police, eventually winning a large settlement. Mr. Olabode’s story is an important example of the pervasive injustice that exists in our legal system. By telling it, he can teach us how to move to correct these problems. His story is inspiring as well as informative.

Book excerpt: All That I Have Is Yours is a book of daily spiritual meditations that beautifully interweaves together 100 stories of encounters with St. Pope Kyrillos VI, along with 100 unique and penetrating meditations on the spiritual life. Each chapter begins with a verse from the Psalms following the daily order and structure of the Coptic Orthodox Book of Hours (Agpeya). Hence, the readings begin with prayer and guide the reader to a greater appreciation and use of the Psalter. The predominant theme of these stories and spiritual meditations is the love of God; the creative, redemptive, and salvific love of God which draws us into a privileged divine filiation with our Heavenly Father and Who says to us, "Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours." (Luke 15:31).Fr. Kyrillos Ibrahim currently serves as a priest at St. Paul American Coptic Orthodox Church in Orange County, California. He holds an M.A. in Theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary. In February 2007, he was one of the first second-generation youths to be ordained to the priesthood by His Eminence Metropolitan Serapion to serve in the Diocese of Los Angeles. Fr. Kyrillos is also on the faculty of St. Athanasius and St. Cyril Coptic Orthodox Theological School (ACTS) teaching courses in dogmatics, patristics, and spiritual theology.

Book excerpt: Heaven is the aim of all mankind. Our hearts long to attain it. We fervently hope to possess it. We struggle to reach it and be blessed by it. Contemplation on the glories of heaven and what awaits its saints gives those who struggle for it a spiritual push forward and makes them forget all their toils. In this English translation of the classic book, "Heaven," originally written in Arabic and derived from a series of sermons by His Grace Bishop Youannis of the Coptic Orthodox Church, The Late Bishop of Gharbia, Egypt and its Suburbs, we find answers to many common questions about heaven: Who has the right to be blessed by the eternal glory in heaven? Will God continue to be merciful as people know Him to be? Will God allow everyone, without any expectations, to enter heaven? What will people do in heaven? Will the saints go straight to heaven after they leave their bodies? What happens after man dies? Will Christ truly come indeed a second time? What will He do?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Murder of Nikolai Vavilov, acclaimed journalist and author Peter Pringle recreates the extraordinary life and tragic end of one of the great scientists of the twentieth century. In a drama of love, revolution, and war that rivals Pasternak's Dr. Zhivago, Pringle tells the story of a young Russian scientist, Nikolai Vavilov, who had a dream of ending hunger and famine in the world. Vavilov's plan would use the emerging science of genetics to breed super plants that could grow anywhere, in any climate, in sandy deserts and freezing tundra, in drought and flood. He would launch botanical expeditions to find these vanishing genes, overlooked by early farmers ignorant of Mendel's laws of heredity. He called it a "mission for all humanity." To the leaders of the young Soviet state, Vavilov's dream fitted perfectly into their larger scheme for a socialist utopia. Lenin supported the adventurous Vavilov, a handsome and seductive young professor, as he became an Indiana Jones, hunting lost botanical treasures on five continents. In a former tsarist palace in what is now St. Petersburg, Vavilov built the world's first seed bank, a quarter of a million specimens, a magnificent living museum of plant diversity that was the envy of scientists everywhere and remains so today. But when Lenin died in 1924 and Stalin took over, Vavilov's dream turned into a nightmare. This son of science was from a bourgeois background, the class of society most despised and distrusted by the Bolsheviks. The new cadres of comrade scientists taunted and insulted him, and Stalin's dreaded secret police built up false charges of sabotage and espionage. Stalin's collectivization of farmland caused chaos in Soviet food production, and millions died in widespread famine. Vavilov's master plan for improving Soviet crops was designed to work over decades, not a few years, and he could not meet Stalin's impossible demands for immediate results. In Stalin's Terror of the 1930s, Russian geneticists were systematically repressed in favor of the peasant horticulturalist Trofim Lysenko, with his fraudulent claims and speculative theories. Vavilov was the most famous victim of this purge, which set back Russian biology by a generation and caused the country untold harm. He was sentenced to death, but unlike Galileo, he refused to recant his beliefs and, in the most cruel twist, this humanitarian pioneer scientist was starved to death in the gulag. Pringle uses newly opened Soviet archives, including Vavilov's secret police file, official correspondence, vivid expedition reports, previously unpublished family letters and diaries, and the reminiscences of eyewitnesses to bring us this intensely human story of a brilliant life cut short by anti-science demagogues, ideology, censorship, and political expedience.

Book excerpt: From his birth in 1946, Masoud Barzani has been a symbol of Kurdistan's fight for independence. He has fought for it as a peshmerga fighter, led the KDP through some of the most difficult times for Kurdistan, and has been president of the region in the phases that led up to the independence of 2017. To understand his impact on Kurdistan and its fight for independence, this book seeks to explore the events that made him who he was, and the life of a man who has marked the transition from Kurdistan in rebellion to Kurdistan as a political entity. Masoud Barzani has been at the heart of Kurdistan, and this work explores what made him uniquely suited for that position.
