Book excerpt: I remember my first wine-tasting experience. I had just newly turned 21, and I was on a trip with some classmates to a small town in Central Vermont. I thought that wine tasting was for older adults. There's no way that college kids would have fun tasting wine in a stuffy old winery. Boy, was I wrong! The first sip of wine, I tried to act cool. I thought that I could drink it down like you take a swig of Pepsi. Again - I was so wrong! I was handed at least six more glasses of wine throughout the course of an hour, and I ended up getting a little tipsy. I found a new world of wine tasting. It wasn't just the taste test that sold me on the idea of visiting wineries. Frequently, the wineries offered tours of their operations. I love the way the wooden barrels smell. I love the splash and bubbles of a freshly opened sweet white Moscato. I love the way the air just seems to be thick with vitality in the bottling room. I find the grounds of most wineries to be charming and bursting with the promise of their variety of fruit. Whether you have an interest in winemaking yourself, are a connoisseur of wine, or simply want to have something to do on your road trip around the country, wine tasting is an excellent option. The first half of this book is going to teach you everything you need to know about wine, winemaking, and wine tasting. You will learn everything you ever wanted to know about wine but were afraid to ask. You will learn about the history of winemaking and the legalities of wine in the US, including if you can transport wine across state lines. You will gain a better understanding of all things related to wine as I will answer some of the most frequently asked questions concerning wine as well as I will define the most used terms in the wine world. The second half of the book is going to be a comprehensive list of all the lesser-known wineries in the United States so you can plan your next wine tasting adventure. Did you know that every single state in the US has at least one winery? You can use this book to plan your next road trip to include a stop (or two) at some wonderful wineries. I have learned so much about wine in the last decade since my first introduction to a wine tasting. You could safely say that I am hooked on anything and everything about wine. I am a "wino" at heart; maybe you are, too. Or perhaps you know someone who would love this book as a gift. Be sure to check out a preview of the book before you click "Add to Cart." This 400+ page book is full of information all about wine and wineries in the United States. Cheers!

Book excerpt: "The winemaking region encompassed by Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties is hot among those in the know -- and with good reason. A huge variety of the finest wines are only a pour away, and the setting is as dazzling as what's in the glass. Yet, despite its recent surge in popular appeal, the coast retains the down-home feel and roll-up-your-sleeves attitude that made it famous. The wineries of the Central Coast offer the perfect mix of elegant hospitality and warm accessibility -- as often as not, the people who pour your wine in the tasting rooms are not only the winemakers, but the winery owners as well, and they are happy to spend time chatting about their passion. Mira Advani Honeycutt's affectionately detailed text is a perfect introduction to this exciting expanse of vineyards. She reveals how the many microclimates of the Santa Ynez, Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande, and Edna Valleys, as well as the area around Paso Robles, have led to the production of an amazing diversity of varietals by an equally varied collection of wineries. Whether you're looking for a lush picnic spot and a glass of bubbly or panoramic views accompanied by a tasting flight of robust Rhône blends, her helpful tips lead the way. In addition, she reveals the distinctive art and architecture that abound in the wineries, while fine cuisine, fresh produce, and eclectic historical sites are never far away."--

He is an eclectic student of wine and an astute taster who never takes himself too seriously. But his Washington Wines & Wineries is a serious publication. The number of Washington wineries has exploded since the turn of the millennium. There are several important new AVAs. Many wonderful wines are being made. So there was an urgent need for this splendid new guide, written with passion and authority. No one who loves Washington wines--in fact, no one serious about wine--should fail to get a copy."—Oz Clarke

Book excerpt: Superbly balanced pinot noirs; crisp rieslings; rich, heady syrahs: these are only a fraction of the expertly crafted wines being produced in the Pacific Northwest's diverse and distinctive wine countries. Second only to California in production, the Pacific Northwest is the largest wine region in North America, home to more than 1,000 wineries. What was once a young wine-growing area with a reputation for eccentricity is today recognized as a dynamic region producing world-class wines, with a focus on ecologically sound practices. This definitive volume profiles the wines, the people who make them, and the wine countries of Washington, Oregon, British Columbia, and Idaho. The journey begins with the region's climates and geology, which create a fascinating tapestry of wine-growing areas. Next, the book focuses on the unique qualities of each wine region, with profiles of more than 160 representative wineries to visit. Included are legacy wineries that helped to build the region’s reputation, prestige wineries with a national presence, under-the-radar artisan wineries that embody the pioneering spirit of the Northwest, and promising new wineries. Each profile lists the winery's signature, premium, value, and estate wines. Beautifully illustrated with photographs and helpful maps, this in-depth guide is a milestone in the North American literature on wine. It will enable wine lovers everywhere to plan their touring, select their wines, and explore and discover the riches of the Northwest's wine country.
