Book excerpt: I remember my first wine-tasting experience. I had just newly turned 21, and I was on a trip with some classmates to a small town in Central Vermont. I thought that wine tasting was for older adults. There's no way that college kids would have fun tasting wine in a stuffy old winery. Boy, was I wrong! The first sip of wine, I tried to act cool. I thought that I could drink it down like you take a swig of Pepsi. Again - I was so wrong! It wasn't just the taste test that sold me on the idea of visiting wineries. Frequently, the wineries offered tours of their operations. I love the way the wooden barrels smell. I love the splash and bubbles of a freshly opened sweet white Moscato. I love the way the air just seems to be thick with vitality in the bottling room. I find the grounds of most wineries to be charming and bursting with the promise of their variety of fruit. Whether you have an interest in winemaking yourself, are a connoisseur of wine, or simply want to have something to do on your road trip around the country, wine tasting is an excellent option. The first half of this book is going to teach you everything you need to know about wine, winemaking, and wine tasting.
