Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Limits of Alignment is an engaging and accessible study that explores how small states and middle powers of Southeast Asia ensure their security in a world where they are overshadowed by greater powers. John D. Ciorciari challenges a central concept in international relations theory—that states respond to insecurity by either balancing against their principal foes, “bandwagoning” with them, or declaring themselves neutral. Instead, he shows that developing countries prefer limited alignments that steer between strict neutrality and formal alliances to obtain the fruits of security cooperation without the perils of undue dependency. Ciorciari also shows how structural and normative shifts following the end of the Cold War and the advent of U.S. primacy have increased the prevalence of limited alignments in the developing world and that these can often place constraints on U.S. foreign policy. Finally, he discusses how limited alignments in the developing world may affect the future course of international security as China and other rising powers gather influence on the world stage.

Book excerpt: This book, the first published by The Owls Foundation, tells you how brilliant ideas and inventions can be transformed into innovations and breakthroughs that make a real impact, and analyses why others fail. In the global world of today there is great interdependency. No country, no institution, no company can do it alone. And we cannot ignore the international context. On top of that, no innovation comes on its own. The active engagement and quality of the leading figures who are interviewed is one of the distinguishing features of this project. These remarkable individuals were generous with their time and thought hard to reflect on their experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atkins Diet? Phooey! The South Beach Diet? Feh! What Americans really want to eat is something deep-fried and sugar-packed . . . hence our undying love affair with the beloved donut. And if anybody knows donuts, it's Sally Levitt Steinberg, America's Donut Princess. As a member of America's royal donut dynasty (her grandfather, Adolph Levitt, invented the donut-making machine), she knows more about this sweet indulgence than anyone else. The Donut Book is the product of Sally's personal charm and life-long, in-depth donut scholarship. She covers high points in donut history: the arrival of the first donuts in America with the Dutch settlers in the 17th century, and the donut in World War I, when it became the favorite nosh of the boys in the trenches. She celebrates donut-loving celebrities, from Admiral Byrd to Bill Clinton, as well as some of the most gifted donut bakers on the planet. She visits the campus of Dunkin' Donuts University and reveals the secret that makes Krispy Kreme donuts irresistible. And she identifies the most popular donut in America (glazed) and the runner-up (chocolate). Then there are the recipes: 29 mouth-watering, soul-satisfying ways to achieve the ultimate sugar rush, from New Orleans beignets to Portuguese malasadas, from Boston crèmes to Alain Ducasse's upscale Donut. And for donut lovers who are willing to hit the road to find their favorite confection, the book comes with an illustrated Donut Lover's Guide to bakeries that serve up the lightest, fluffiest, best dressed, and tastiest donuts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. E. GRANT is a pseudonym for Gard E. Norberg, and refers to his emigrant status. A Swede by birth, and a dedicated environmentalist, he has been a regular contributor to the British monthly, The Ecologist, and one of his essays written for that magazine was recently included in Visions Across the Americas, a collection of essays by mostly American writers - including such well-known authors as Gore Vidal, Isaac Asimov, Garrison Keillor, Maya Angelou, Ray Bradbury, Alice Walker, and Martin Luther King Jr. There is a saying in Swedish that, loosely translated, means "You chastise the one you love," and 'YANKEE GO HOME - But Please Take Me With You' is an hilariously funny critique of some of the more egregious manifestations of 'the American way of life'. But, as the title indicates, most foreigners critical of the United States would give almost anything for the privilege of living here. The 83-year old author owns some property in Costa Rica, but he and his American-born wife spend most of their time in a condo in Dania Beach, the Florida town that was founded by Danish immigrants, and which this year celebrates its centennial as the oldest city in Broward County.
