Book excerpt: Sparks fly when Aleck, the frustrated but charismatic son of a miner, falls for the daughter of the elitist owner of the mine — a forbidden love that turns dangerous when Aleck uncovers a fantastical secret about his family that changes everything he knows about himself, the people around him and his home town of White Ash. Welcome to White Ash, a small smudge of a town in western Pennsylvania, where mining is a generational calling and the secrets are buried deeper than the coal in the mountain. As Aleck Zwerg tries to escape that legacy and head off to college, he falls into the orbit of the enigmatic Lillian Alden. Together, they race down a dangerous path, leading Aleck to uncover a secret about his family that changes everything he knows about himself and White Ash. And now, if he leaves, there will be no one left to protect the people of the town from an ancient evil that has just returned. As they say in White Ash, "The smaller the town, the bigger the secret." Written by Charlie Stickney (The Adept, The Game) and Illustrated by Conor Hughes and Fin Cramb, and published by Scout Comics, White Ash: Vol 1 collects issues 1-6 of the hit Urban Fantasy comic book.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The survival, growth, and stem form of 45 white ash (Fraxinus americana L.) families nested within 22 provenances were evaluated 1 5 years after establishment in North Central West Virginia. Geographic family origins encompassed a wide area in the eastern and central United States, including locations from Maine in the North to Mississippi in the South to Nebraska in the West. Significant differences were identified among provenances for survival, stem form, total height, and stem diameter and among families within provenances for stem form and total height. Latitude was a significant indicator of provenance performance with performance declining north and south of the plantation latitude. Performance gains may be realized by using proper provenances then identifying superior families within these provenances for white ash artificial regeneration activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED AN NPR GREAT READ OF 2018 From the Shirley Jackson Award–winning author of The Hole, a Kafkaesque tale of crime and punishment hailed by Korea’s Wall Street Journal as “an airtight masterpiece.” Distinguished for his talents as a rat killer, the nameless protagonist of Hye-young Pyun's City of Ash and Red is sent by the extermination company he works for on an extended assignment in C, a country descending into chaos and paranoia, swept by a contagious disease, and flooded with trash. No sooner does he disembark than he is whisked away by quarantine officials and detained overnight. Isolated and forgotten, he realizes that he is stranded with no means of contacting the outside world. Still worse, when he finally manages to reach an old friend, he is told that his ex-wife's body was found in his apartment and he is the prime suspect. Barely managing to escape arrest, he must struggle to survive in the streets of this foreign city gripped with fear of contamination and reestablish contact with his company and friends in order to clear his reputation. But as the man's former life slips further and further from his grasp, and he looks back on his time with his wife, it becomes clear that he may not quite be who he seems. From the bestselling author of The Hole, City of Ash and Red is an apocalyptic account of the destructive impact of fear and paranoia on people's lives as well as a haunting novel about a man’s loss of himself and his humanity.
