Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanoes of North America: A Reading Lesson for Students of Geography and Geology The series of active and recently extinct volcanoes forming the major part of the Windward islands, sepa rating the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic, will not be considered, as it is most intimately associated with the geography and geology of South America. Although Iceland is more closely connected geographically with America than with Europe, its political association with the Old World, and the fact that it has frequently been described by European travellers, make it convenient to omit it from the present discussion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lakes of North America: A Reading Lesson for Students of Geography and Geology The history of a lake begins with the origin of its basin and considers among other subjects the movements of its waters, the changes it pro duces in the topography of its shores, its relations to climate, its geological functions, its connection with plant and animal life, etc. It is in this general order that the lakes of North America are considered in the present volume. The standpoint from which the subject is treated is that of the geologist and geographer, its relation to man being left to the archaeologist and the historian. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rivers of North America: A Reading Lesson for Students of Geography and Geology When once the idea 15 grasped that each and every one of the elements in a landscape has a history which can be read, and that the end is not yet, but still other transformations are to come, an insatiable desire is awakened for more knowledge concerning especially the work of the streams to which so many of the changes that have been made on the earth's surface are due. What laws do the streams obey What conditions modify their normal behaviour? What are the various stages in the transformations they are making everywhere about us? Are there other forces in action, tending to counteract their destructive work Are the conditions to which man has become adjusted to pass away P What changes are to come? Is the re-modelling of the land to be continued for ever, or will there be a final condi tion beyond which the expression of the face of Nature will become sphinx-like and unchanging These and many more queries crowd themselves on the mind when once an interest in the daily scenes about us is awakened. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lakes of North America: A Reading Lesson for Students of Geography and Geology A large portion of the facts to the lakes of North America, presented in this book, were gleaned by the writer during thirteen years' geological work for the National Government, and are recorded principally in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. The facilities for exploration afforded by my connection with Government surveys enabled me to visit various parts of the United States, inclusive of Alaska, and to observe many phases in the topographical development of our continent. The publications of the U. S. Geological Survey, and of several State surveys, also contain the records of observations by others, relating to the subject here treated, which have been freely used. It is hoped that this popular presentation of a small part of the results of the various surveys referred to will serve to direct attention to the rich and varied store of information contained in the reports of my colleagues and fellow-workers. Besides the publications of official surveys, many papers relating to the subject here discussed have appeared in journals, proceedings of scientific societies, etc., to which references may be found in footnotes in this volume. The origin of lake basins and the history of the great cycles in the development of the relief of the land to which they pertain, have been discussed especially by Professor W. M. Davis, of Harvard University. Professor Davis has also read the manuscript of this book and kindly given me the benefit of his criticisms and suggestions.
