INTRODUCTION. Any one who compares an old castle with a modern fortress, who turns, say, from the eastern to the western heights of Dover, must be struck not only by the many points of difference between them, but also by the singular course of development which these differences indicate. The new works are neither so imposing nor so elaborate as the old, and instead of advancing steadily upon one line, the art of defence seems to have changed direction, and in some respects to have gone backward. The reason is that fortification is peculiarly dependent upon other arts. It is the making of armour to protect men from the weapons of others while allowing them to use their own, and must adapt itself therefore to all the changes of weapons, instead of taking its own course. Corresponding to the broad division of missiles and hand-weapons, the main elements of all fortification are cover and obstacle. Down to the fifteenth century, handweapons played the principal part in war; missiles were B an accessory, largely neutralized by body-armour; and the great aim of military architects was to increase and multiply the passive obstacles which hindered besiegers from coming to close quarters with the besieged. But the enormous development of missile force which has followed on the adoption of gunpowder has thrown hand-weapons into the background. Fortification has had to take a new departure, and the skilful adaptation of cover, so as to combine the utmost effectiveness of the fire of the defence with the utmost immunity from the fire of the attack, has become more and more definitely! the problem of the engineer. The character of mediaeval fortification, and the methods of attack and defence, have been described with...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vauban, Montalembert, Carnot: Engineer Studies The three essays which form the chief part of this volume, have already appeared in the Quarterly Review, the Royal Engineers' Journal, and the United Service Magazine, respectively. Some portions of the Introduction were included in the new d104-book of Fortification for the use of the Cadets of the Royal Military Academy, issued in 1878; and the last paper, on modem forts, was published in the Journal of the Royal United Service Institution, in 1882. They are now brought together as illustrating successive stages in the history of fortification and fortress warfare. It is hoped that they may furnish some useful clues to those who care to study that subject in the only way in which it can be studied to much purpose, by going to the fountain heads. Book excerpt: “[A] vivid and well written account of the life of the man who built some of the most magnificent military structures known to man.”—Clayton Donnell, “Fortress Archaeologist” Sebastien Le Prestre, Marshal Vauban, was one of the greatest military engineers of all time. His complex, highly sophisticated fortress designs, his advanced theories for the defense and attack of fortified places, and his prolific work as a writer and radical thinker on military and social affairs, mark him out as one of the most influential military minds of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Yet no recent study of this extraordinary man has been published in English. James Falkner, in this perceptive and lively new account of Vauban’s life and work, follows his career as a soldier from a dashing and brave young cavalry officer to his emergence as a masterful military engineer. And he shows that Vauban was much more than simply a superlative builder of fortresses, for as a leading military commander serving Louis XIV, he perfected a method for attacking fortifications in the most effective way, which became standard practice until the present day. Falkner’s new study will add significantly to the understanding of Vauban’s achievements and the impact his work has had on the history of warfare. “A very enjoyable read for those looking for a good, basic account of Vauban’s career and his role in the wars of Louis XIV and of fortification more generally. Its usefulness is enhanced by various maps and reproductions of portraits of key characters and of contemporary plans of fortresses.”—War in History

Book excerpt: The later seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have been acclaimed as the classic period of artillery fortification. This was an era when fortresses and fortress systems shaped the calculations of strategists and statesmen, and often dictated the course of campaigns. The age was one of almost constant conflict and this book, originally published in 1985, explores the influence of the fortress in the dynastic wars of Bourbon, Habsburg and Hohenzollern, the contest for influence in the Baltic, the last crusades of the West against the Turks, and in the peculiar conditions of colonial campaigning and the War of the American Independence.

Book excerpt: This is a description of how the Nine Years War affected the British Army, both in its actual operations in the theatre of war and in its size, operative capacity and costs. This war brought about radical changes in the sizes and the associated costs of the armies of Britain, France, Austria and the United Provinces in a relatively short period. For example, the size of field armies grew from an average of about 25,000 men during the Thirty Years' War to an average of about 100,000 men in 1695 during the Nine Years War. The costs of sustaining such huge field forces in terms of food, equipment and pay brought Britain and France, in particular, fiscal crisis and a shattered economy respectively, after the peace.
