Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the bestselling author of Fatherland and Munich comes a WWII thriller about a German rocket engineer, a former actress turned British spy, and the Nazi rocket program. The first rocket will take five minutes to hit London. You have six minutes to stop the second. Rudi Graf is an engineer who always dreamed of sending rockets to the moon. But instead, he finds himself working alongside Wernher von Braun, launching V2 rockets at London for the Nazis from a bleak seaside town in occupied Holland. As the SS increases its scrutiny on the project, Graf, an engineer more than a soldier, has to muster all of his willpower to toe the party line. And when rumors of a defector circulate through the German ranks, Graf becomes a prime suspect. Meanwhile, Kay Caton-Walsh, a young English intelligence officer, is living through the turmoil of war. After she and her lover, an RAF officer, are caught in a V2 attack, she volunteers to ship out for newly liberated Belgium. Armed with little more than a slide rule and a few equations, Kay and her colleagues hope to locate and destroy the launch sites. But at this stage in the war it’s hard to know who, if anyone, she can trust. As the death toll soars, these twin stories play out against the background of the German missile campaign during the Second World War. And what the reader comes to understand is that Kay’s and Graf’s destinies are on a collision course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing of Charged Particles, Volume II presents the aspects of particle optics, including the electron, the ion optical domains, and the accelerator field. This book provides a detailed analysis of the principles of the laws of propagation of beams. Comprised of three parts encompassing three chapters, this volume starts with an overview of how a beam of charged particles traverses a region that is at a uniform, constant, electrostatic potential. This book then discusses the principle of charge repulsion effect by which the space charge of the beam modifies the potential in the region that it traverses. Other chapters examine the general design techniques and performances obtainable for electron guns applicable for use in initiating a beam for linear beam tubes that is given in a condensed form. The last chapter deals with the two stable charged particles that can be accelerated, namely, protons and electrons. This book is a valuable resource to physicists, accelerator experts, and experimenters in search of interactions in the detector target.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Excited States of Polyatomic Molecules, Volume II focuses on a higher level of activity in vacuum ultraviolet spectroscopy. This book explores the Rydberg states in atoms and molecules. Comprised of five chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the two-center unsaturated molecules that usually display sharp Rydberg transitions originating with the pi electrons. This book then discusses the unsaturated double bond that adds another dimension to the spectrum. Other chapters explore the optical spectrum of the amide group, which is the basic chromophoric unit in polypeptides. This text further discusses the all-electron calculations of the electronic structure of the amide group that is performed in Gaussian orbital basis sets. This book considers as well the prominent characteristic of Rydberg excitations in benzene. The final chapter deals with the biological molecules that are polyfunctional in general. Analytical chemists, photochemists, molecular spectroscopists, and researchers will find this book extremely useful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 8 September 1944 the first of over 1,000 V2 missiles aimed at southern England exploded in west London. It had been launched from a wooded street corner in Den Haag in the Netherlands. Fighter Command was responsible for defending Britain from air attack and thus Air Marshal Roderic Hill countered the threat by using six squadrons of Spitfires from 12 Group bases in Norfolk to discover and then dive-bomb the mobile V2 launch sites scattered throughout the Dutch towns and countryside. This was no easy task as the missiles were well camouflaged and often positioned adjacent to dwellings occupied by civilians. The RAF was under orders to cause minimum damage to Dutch property and life, therefore precision bombing became a necessity. This is a full account of the campaign including discussions of the strategy and tactics employed and the equipment used and it also considers the effect upon Dutch civilians. It draws upon the experiences of sixteen Allied pilots, ground crew and the Dutch who were at the receiving-end of the attacks.

Book excerpt: Fluorine Chemistry, Volume II focuses on studies on fluorocarbons and fluorocarbon derivatives. Composed of various literature, the book first discusses fluorine-containing complex salts and acids. The complex fluorides of alkali metals, beryllium, boron, carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, and lead are described. The text also looks at research on halogen fluorides. The physical properties of chlorine, bromine, and iodine fluorides; halogen fluorides as ionizing solvents; and acids and bases in iodine pentafluoride and chlorine trifluoride are discussed. The book discusses analytical chemistry of fluorine and fluorine-containing compounds. Analysis of gaseous samples; separation and isolation of fluorine; qualitative detection and identification of fluorine; and determination of fluorine in specific materials are described. The text also focuses on organic compounds containing fluorine. Alcohols, acids and their derivatives, polymer containing fluorines, amines, amino acids, drugs, dyes, and pesticides are discussed as well. The book further looks at metallic compounds containing fluorocarbon radicals and organometallic compounds containing fluorine, fluorocarbon chemistry, and the infrared spectra of fluorocarbons and related compounds. The text is a vital source of information for readers wanting to study fluorocarbons and fluorocarbon derivatives.

This symposium surveys the various methods and applications of thermal analysis, as well as the distribution of various aspects of thermal analysis in different countries. This book is organized into four sections encompassing 51 chapters, and begins with discussion on the application of differential thermal analysis to metallurgical inorganic materials and reactions for industrial process optimization. These topics are followed by a consideration of other techniques, such as X-ray methods and thermography. The Physical Chemistry part highlights the reaction kinetics and thermodynamics of various chemical reactions, including oxidation and polymerization, using thermogravimetry and calorimetry techniques. The following part focuses on mineral analysis using combined techniques of thermoanalytic-mass spectrometry and differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry. The last part deals with the application of thermal analysis in applied sciences.

This book reviews the techniques that have been proven successful in the study of interatomic potentials in order to describe the interactions between complex molecules. The ground state properties of the interacting electron gas when a magnetic field is present are also elaborated, followed by a discussion on the Gellman-Brueckner-Macke theory of the correlation energy that has applications in atomic and molecular systems. This volume considers the instability of the Hartree-Fock ground state in a magnetic field and very high magnetic fields that are pertinent to the structure of matter in collapsed stellar objects. The electron-hole plasma in certain highly-doped semiconductors and many-electron correlation problem are likewise included. This publication is a good reference for students and researchers conducting work on the mathematical description of chemistry.
