Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tudor Ideals An early book by the writer on the Italian Renaissance in England had been intended as a partial introduction to a future history of English Sixteenth Century Ideals. But a diplomatic career spent mainly in distant parts, had interfered with its pursuit, and the shadow of a great war has been little conducive to the concentration required for such a study. Like those architects who with vast plans in mind rear only a small wing of their edifice, the writer has been obliged to restrict his scope and his material till no one is more conscious than he of its fragmentary and imperfect nature. In attempting to reduce into words the multiple activities of a nation, it is no easy task to weigh their relative importance or to feel convinced that one's individual sense of perspective is either the correct or the only one. Historical perceptions are largely personal. One searches fixed points from which to measure distances. But such measurements at best are incomplete, and often other deductions might be drawn from the same range of facts. Especially, when the search is for ideals rather than for a chronological sequence, and the goal is the inner spirit of a nation at a rich moment of its evolution, the method utilized, which aims to find the expression of ideas in letters, and in acts, must be haphazard and the result elusive. It is easy to discolour history by over-blackening its shadows. It is as easy to bring out its drabness by reducing all to one dull plane. This study is only an incomplete essay which seeks to discover if under the vast maze of facts, can be found the rational beginnings of a structure of life in Sixteenth Century England. Book excerpt: The triumphs of the Tudor age are well known; less apparent is the pain that went hand-in-hand with success. This book considers the cost of great achievement. Michael Foss, author of The World of Camelot and The Search for Cleopatra, holds a microscope up to the lives of key Tudor figures. He paints a portrait of key Tudor figures undone by the stern course of the century - Walsingham, made poor and hurried to the grave by the laborious demands of Elizabeth's administration; Philip Sidney, who found no place for his chivalrous idealism in the faithless world of contemporary polity - in an age which resembled 'a bow too long bent'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The swearing of oaths is a cultural phenomenon that pervades English history and was remarkably important during the sixteenth century. This multi-disciplinary work explores how writers of the Tudor era addressed the subject in response to the profound changes of the Reformation and the creative explosion of the Elizabethan period. Topics include how the art of rhetoric was deployed in polemic, the way in which oaths formed bonds between Church and State, and how oaths functioned in literature, as ceremony and as a language England used to describe itself during times of radical change.
