Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trends in Airborne Equipment for Agriculture and Other Areas is a collection of papers presented at a Seminar on Techno-economic Trends in Airborne Equipment for Agriculture and other Selected Areas of the National Economy (Aero-agro '78), organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and held in Warsaw, Poland, on September 18-22, 1978. Contributors examine the role of airborne equipment in agriculture and other areas from the perspectives of economic, technical and environmental concerns. Attention is paid to the value of soil surveys and land evaluation maps and of biogeographical analyses of pest outbreaks in planning aerial application operations. This book is comprised of 45 chapters and begins with a discussion on the economic aspects of airborne equipment, with emphasis on the value of bio-aeronautics in crop production and protection and of aircraft in the management of biological resources. Among the many techniques to improve economic efficiency, speed and timing are highlighted. The technical design and operation of equipment for aircraft are also considered, along with the use of helicopters as airborne cranes for a wide range of applications such as building construction and geological surveys. The results of experiments on the corrosive effects of pesticides, both in water and oil suspensions, are presented. A non-polluting insecticide particularly suited for ultra-low volume operations is also described, together with the use of light aircraft for fighting forest fires. This monograph will be a valuable resource for economists and agriculturists as well as policymakers in both areas.

Book excerpt: Oils and Gases from Coal reviews the state-of-the-art in oil and gases from coal in Europe and North America based on the work of the Symposium on the Gasification and Liquefaction of Coal. The said symposium is held under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe at Katowice, Poland on April 23-27, 1979. Separating 23 papers as chapters, this book begins with the opening lecture on the efficiency of coal gasification and liquefaction processes. Other papers focus on the assessment of world resources of coal and prospects for the production of different types of coal; comparative end-use efficiency of the use of coal; theoretical bases of coal gasification; underground coal gasification; and use of coal products for non-energy purposes. The utilization or disposal of coal processing residues; development of processes of semi-coking and gasification of oil shales; further development of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis; application of fluidization in coal gasification; and evaluation of the trade-offs from regional coal development and environmental strategies are also explained.

Book excerpt: Combined Production of Electric Power and Heat contains the proceedings of a seminar organized by the Committee on Electric Power of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, held in Hamburg, Federal Republic of Germany in November 1978. The book highlights the sharing of information on the economic and social aspects of efficient energy and heat production technologies. Contributors from different countries present papers discussing various topics on electric power and heat production such as energy policies to save energy; combined production of heat and electricity and district heating for energy conservation and oil substitution; technical and economic aspects of the combined production of electric power and heat; and the institutional, financial, and methodical problems of energy production. Policy makers, engineers, politicians, scientists, and political leaders will find the book invaluable.

Book excerpt: Energy Modelling Studies and Conservation documents the proceedings of seminar of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe held in Washington D.C., on 24-28 March 1980. The volume begins with a Seminar Theme Paper that identifies background policy issues that lead to modeling; discusses points of view involved in energy policy modeling; defines the context of a set of energy conservation problems or questions being analyzed; and provides a forward-looking view of the subject and its problems. This is followed by 54 papers that are organized into three main topics: (1) energy models of major interest to individual countries; (2) the interaction between energy conservation measures and the economy; and (3) the international aspects of energy conservation models. The papers on Topic 1 cover forecasting methodologies, demand and conservation studies, and electricity and supply studies. The papers on Topic 2 present the experiences in countries such as Norway, UK, the USSR, and US. The papers on Topic 3 include studies on energy conservation policies in France, Germany, and Italy; and the MARKAL multi-period linear programming model for joint research and development in the field of new energy technologies of the 17 countries of the International Energy Agency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect trapping is a basic field research tool for many biologists, whether they are studying insect pests, disease vectors or insect ecology for its own sake. Any field entomologist contemplating a new insect trapping program or looking to improve or develop an existing scheme will benefit from this broad review of flying insect traps, in which the author draws on a wide variety of methods used by different research projects from all over the world. Over the years a great many traps have been developed and endlessly modified to suit particular species, habitats, and research requirements. In virtually every case the design of the trap interacts with the specific behavior of the insects involved to bias trap efficiency. In addition, the limited dialogue between workers in different subject disciplines and habitats has caused a shortage of new information available to field entomologists as a whole. Describes and evaluates the main methods of trapping flying insects Brings together results from agricultural/forest/pest studies and those from medical entomology
