Book excerpt: Before Arnold, cinematically and in bodybuilding annals, there was Steve Reeves. With the breathtaking lines and classic style, the man took his genetic blueprint and raced away with it, creating arguably the most impressive physique in the history of the planet. No, not the biggest (though he had great size), and no, not the most ripped (though he had considerable definition), but certainly as greatly and carefully proportioned, shaped and attended a physique as we’ve ever seen. You might get a vastly better physique by incorporating something of the Reeves approach to training. Not that you’ll be Reeves--you don’t get Larry Scott’s arms by doing his arm workout, but in the case of Reeves-style training, your chances are very good that you’ll be on the road to achieving your own best physique, with your own individual style. Sound good? Let’s go.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The incomparable figure of Steve Reeves stands astride bodybuilding history, so much so that some are not even sure he was real. Rest assured, though, Steve Reeves and the magnificent physique he created—some would say the greatest ever in bodybuilding—was plenty real. While many others admire Reeves and the physique he created, the legacy of his type of physique has been obscured by the different direction modern bodybuilding has taken. This should no longer be the case. Although Reeves left a written legacy of his training and nutrition record, many bodybuilders—particularly natural bodybuilders—still don’t quite understand how to apply his principles of nutrition and working out to develop their own physiques. That’s where this little book comes in. We examine not only Reeves’ training methods, but offer explanations as to why Reeves chose and developed these, as well as his unique yet straightforward approach to nutrition. The beauty of Reeves’ approach is that with a little thought, these methods can be applied to any drug-free bodybuilder for potentially terrific gains. In this book, you’ll learn of Steve Reeves’ approach to exercise for building his legendary physique—as well as some of the exercises Reeves used and why, along with ideas on how to adapt these to your own needs and how to adjust your own workouts to construct your own classic natural physique. Steve ReevesThere’s also an examination of Reeves’ nutrition—an often overlooked element of his success—and how this approach also can be incorporated by natural bodybuilders. In an age of fads and extreme nutrition, this re-examination of Reeves’ underrated knowledge and application of his nutritional approach can be a key to unlocking greater gains for natural bodybuilders. Take a quick journey with us as we take a look at how the greatest physique in the history of the world got that way, and how you too can develop your best physique ever, by Training and Eating the Steve Reeves Way.

His highly effective, proven approach enables bodybuilders to get results--and win competitions--by doing shorter, less frequent workouts each week. Extremely time-efficient, HIT sessions require roughly 40 minutes per week of training--as compared with the lengthy workout sessions many bodybuilders would expect to put in daily. In addition to sharing Mentzer's workout and training techniques, featured here is fascinating biographical information and striking photos of the world-class bodybuilder--taken by noted professional bodybuilding photographers--that will inspire and instruct serious bodybuilders and weight lifters everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First there was Steve Reeves the ultimate, and in my opinion, incomparable world class bodybuilder. He won all the National and International bodybuilding titles without using steroids, artificial enhancers or unethical practices. Steve was hard-working and innovative. His sharp mind and determination mixed workouts with nutrition to create a magnificent male body. Next there was Steve Reeves the actor who filled our movie theater screens with sensational, larger than life portrayals. He played the lead in fifteen movies including Hercules, The Thief of Baghdad, Duel of the Titans, Son of Spartacus, and Goliath and the Barbarians. His personal favorite was Long Ride from Hell - his only Western Last there was Steve Reeves the rancher, horse breeder and author. Steve was never deluded about being a great actor. He made movies in order to build a nest egg which enabled him to own and enjoy a couple of ranches back home in the Western United States. Ranching was always his first love and passion. This Steve Reeves was mostly out of the limelight. He spent his time hard at work digging post holes and breeding gaited Morgan horses. This book is about my life with Steve Reeves, the rancher, during the last seven years of his life. It is written from the perspective of a woman who was (and will always be) deeply, madly in love with Steve Reeves I am writing these memories down now due to concerns that dementia, the disease which has devastated my mother's mind, may be germinating in me. It is a case of "before I forget what I can still remember." I have relied heavily on my personal journals to bring focus to that which the passage of time, my series of small strokes and what might be dementia, has fogged. I do not want the memory of my Stephen (Steve Reeves to millions of fans) to dissolve and become forever lost. He was such a remarkable man. Once I knew him, I would never be the same. Steve Reeves was more than just an actor with a powerful physique. He was quite brilliant. He would examine a machine, tool or product and then explain how he would change this part or that aspect to improve its function. He used a complex combination of his natural creativity with his work experience and logic to improve the workings or the designs of many things. Experiencing first hand his ability to improve on every-thing that arrived on the ranch (from a brand-new Featherlite horse trailer to halters and toilet roll holders) made me wish his fans could realize how much more there was to their Steve Reeves. His face, his physique, his movies and his voice were only a small part of the total man. Add to those attributes, among other things, his expert knowledge of physical training and nutrition. His work ethic was unsurpassed and his determination to improve the Morgan horse breed was tragically interrupted. (Full Color Version)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some trainers recommend to their pupils for the training of all muscle groups one and the same (light) weight and believe they are able to obtain the same effect by frequent repetitions. My experience has taught me that this is wrong, for the muscles of men or animals who are distinguished for certain feats of endurance are by no means over-developed. A long-distance runner or long-distance cyclist always has comparatively thin legs, as have a racehorse, stag, or greyhound. Nature does not act without aim and purpose. Hence there is a great difference between feats of endurance and feats of strength. One must consider that, although it is quite possible to enlarge muscles by certain light, prolonged exercises, at the same time the development of the sinews may be neglected, and it is the sinews which transport the action of the muscles to the bone xframe. The sinews can only be exercised and strengthened by correspondingly heavy muscle work. Besides, to take a paradoxical example, it is quite impossible to improve strong muscle groups, as, for instance, the hip muscles, with light-weight exercises. A further illustration of the fallacy of attempting to develop the muscles by frequent repetitions with the same light exercises may be found in a comparison with any and every other form of athletics, in which a man would never think of merely repeating his training programme. In order to improve himself either in pace or distance, he must set himself a steady progression of arduous effort". - George Hackenschmidt This is an original version, restored and re-formatted edition of Hackenschmidt's 1908 classic.
