Book excerpt: A link between power line magnetic fields and childhood leukemia was revealed in a 1979 health study. More studies in the U.S. and Europe supported these findings, including links to other diseases. But when careful measurements were made in schools, offices and residences it was found that most high magnetic fields in buildings were caused by certain common wiring errors, as well as by electric currents on water pipes due to grounding practices. Karl Riley pioneered a successful method of tracing high magnetic fields to the site of the error. A simple correction clears the field. Though his clients in 17 states may see him as an electrical Sherlock Holmes, he follows a simple, logical measurement sequence which leads him inevitably to the spot where the error was made. Correction is simple and obvious. His entire diagnostic method is spelled out in this book, for the use of electricians or technically inclined home owners.

Book excerpt: When Thomas Edison began wiring New York City with a direct current electricity distribution system in the 1880s, he gave humankind the magic of electric light, heat, and power; in the process, though, he inadvertently opened a Pandoras Box of unimaginable illness and death. Dirty Electricity tells the story of Dr. Samuel Milham, the scientist who first alerted the world about the frightening link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and human disease. Milham takes readers through his early years and education, following the twisting path that led to his discovery that most of the twentieth century diseases of civilization, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and suicide, are caused by electromagnetic field exposure. In the second edition, he explains how electrical exposure does its damage, and how electricity is causing our current epidemics of asthma, diabetes and obesity. Dr. Milham warns that because of the recent proliferation of radio frequency radiation from cell phones and towers, terrestrial antennas, Wi-Fi and Wi-max systems, broadband internet over power lines, and personal electronic equipment, we may be facing a looming epidemic of morbidity and mortality. In Dirty Electricity, he reveals the steps we must take, personally and as a society, to coexist with this marvelous but dangerous technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In chapters culled from the popular and critically acclaimed Electromagnetic Compatibility Handbook, Transmission Lines, Matching, and Crosstalk provides a tightly focused, convenient, and affordable reference for those interested primarily in this subset of topics. Author Kenneth L. Kaiser demystifies transmission lines, matching, and crosstalk and explains the source and limitations of the approximations, guidelines, models, and rules-of-thumb used in this field. The material is presented in a unique question-and-answer format that gets straight to the heart of each topic. The book includes numerous examples and uses Mathcad to generate all of the figures and many solutions to equations. In many cases, the entire Mathcad program is provided.

Book excerpt: Electronics explained in one volume, using both theoretical and practical applications. Mike Tooley provides all the information required to get to grips with the fundamentals of electronics, detailing the underpinning knowledge necessary to appreciate the operation of a wide range of electronic circuits, including amplifiers, logic circuits, power supplies and oscillators. The 5th edition includes an additional chapter showing how a wide range of useful electronic applications can be developed in conjunction with the increasingly popular Arduino microcontroller, as well as a new section on batteries for use in electronic equipment and some additional/updated student assignments. The book's content is matched to the latest pre-degree level courses (from Level 2 up to, and including, Foundation Degree and HND), making this an invaluable reference text for all study levels, and its broad coverage is combined with practical case studies based in real-world engineering contexts. In addition, each chapter includes a practical investigation designed to reinforce learning and provide a basis for further practical work. A companion website at http://www.key2electronics.com offers the reader a set of spreadsheet design tools that can be used to simplify circuit calculations, as well as circuit models and templates that will enable virtual simulation of circuits in the book. These are accompanied by online self-test multiple choice questions for each chapter with automatic marking, to enable students to continually monitor their own progress and understanding. A bank of online questions for lecturers to set as assignments is also available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With increasing use of mobile phones and VDUs, levels of background radiation and electromagnetism are rising, particularly in the workplace and also in the home. To some extent this is unavoidable, but the level of dangers is unclear: is it trivially small, moderate or high? What are the risks of illness, and how can these be reduced to minimal or tolerable levels? Are some people more vulnerable than others? What can or should employers, building engineers and designers, product designers, workers and other members of the public do? This book, of which the chapters derive from presentations given by distinguished authorities at a major international conference, aims to present sound technical information on the whole range of key issues in a clear and accessible way.
