Book excerpt: Telling time becomes clear and easy for young readers in this bright and lively introduction to measurements of time. From seconds to minutes, hours to days, exploring what time is and discovering why we need to tell time, helps young readers understand more than 'the big hand is on the one and the little hand is on the two'. Megan Halsey’s playful illustrations depict imaginative digital and analog clocks that range in design. With the help of a whole lot of clocks, a dash of humor, and a few familiar circumstances, learning to tell time is a lot of fun. It's about time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Micro-electronics and so integrated circuit design are heavily driven by technology scaling. The main engine of scaling is an increased system performance at reduced manufacturing cost (per system). In most systems digital circuits dominate with respect to die area and functional complexity. Digital building blocks take full - vantage of reduced device geometries in terms of area, power per functionality, and switching speed. On the other hand, analog circuits rely not on the fast transition speed between a few discrete states but fairly on the actual shape of the trans- tor characteristic. Technology scaling continuously degrades these characteristics with respect to analog performance parameters like output resistance or intrinsic gain. Below the 100 nm technology node the design of analog and mixed-signal circuits becomes perceptibly more dif cult. This is particularly true for low supply voltages near to 1V or below. The result is not only an increased design effort but also a growing power consumption. The area shrinks considerably less than p- dicted by the digital scaling factor. Obviously, both effects are contradictory to the original goal of scaling. However, digital circuits become faster, smaller, and less power hungry. The fast switching transitions reduce the susceptibility to noise, e. g. icker noise in the transistors. There are also a few drawbacks like the generation of power supply noise or the lack of power supply rejection.

When introducing the concept, start with the use of an analog clock because it gives the concept of change through the moving hands. This educational book is perfect for little learners. Book excerpt: In Pressed for Time, Judy Wajcman explains why we immediately interpret our experiences with digital technology as inexorably accelerating everyday life. She argues that we are not mere hostages to communication devices, and the sense of always being rushed is the result of the priorities and parameters we ourselves set rather than the machines that help us set them."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: Exploring mediated time, this book contemplates how far (and in what ways) media and time are intertwined from a diverse set of theoretical and empirical angles. It builds from theoretical discussions concerning the question of mediation and the normative framing of time (especially acceleration) and works its way through questions of time for/of one’s own, resisting temporalities, polychronicity, in-between-time, simultaneity and other time concepts. It further examines specific time frames, imaginations of a media future and the past, questions of online journalism and multitasking or liveness. Bringing together authors from diverse backgrounds, this collection presents a rich combination of milestone articles, new empirical research, enriching theoretical work and interviews with leading researchers to bridge sociology, media studies, and science and technology studies in one of the first book-length publications on the emerging field of media and time.

Book excerpt: Eschewing the traditional focus on object/viewer spatial relationships, Timothy Scott Barker's Time and the Digital stresses the role of the temporal in digital art and media. The connectivity of contemporary digital interfaces has not only expanded the relationships between once separate spaces but has increased the complexity of the temporal in nearly unimagined ways. Barker puts forward the notion that the new ways we interact with digital media, including ever-expanding digital networks and databases that house vast amounts of data, actually produce a new type of time. Invoking the process philosophy of Whitehead and Deleuze, and taking examples from the history of media art as well as our daily interaction with digital technology, he strives for nothing less than a new philosophy of time in digital encounters, aesthetics, and interactivity. Of interest to scholars in the fields of art and media theory and philosophy of technology, as well as new media artists, this study contributes to an understanding of the new temporal experiences emergent in our interactions with digital technologies.

Book excerpt: Real Time Digital Control Applications is a compilation of papers presented at the Symposium on Real-Time Digital Control Applications, sponsored by the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP), held in Guadalajara, Mexico. The event is organized to provide developing countries with the opportunity to gain insights -- from the sharing of ideas and experiences of experts from around the world to the rapid growth and development of applications of real-time digital control systems, which is considered as the basis of industrial revolution. The book presents and discusses the various scientific, industrial, and technical applications of real-time digital control systems. Applications in power generation, water, metal processing, cement, food, and manufacturing industries are shown. The text also covers applications in robotics, biomedicine, monitoring and failure detection, fuel optimization and heat control, adaptive process control, modeling, and computer software. Industrial engineers, scientists, economists, computer scientists, robotics experts, planners, and technicians will find this book invaluable.
