Book excerpt: Examinations of Francis Ponge's texts on Jean Fautrier's “Hostage Paintings,” Jack Whitten's Memorial Paintings, and Banksy's auction stunt Love is in the Bin. This book contains three case studies on very different artists, analyzing their work through their respective historical contexts: the writer Francis Ponge (1899–1988) and his seminal text on Jean Fautrier's “Hostage Paintings” from 1943; visual artist Jack Whitten's (1939–2018) Memorial Paintings and Banksy's notorious auction stunt Love is in the Bin from 2018. Examining all three artistic propositions from a value-theoretical point of view, Graw finds Ponge's text on Fautrier to be “doubly materialist” insofar as it (seemingly) reveals its own material conditions while simultaneously grasping the specific materiality of Fautrier's paintings; suggests that the indications of value in Whitten's painting to be more indirect; and reveals Banksy's value reflections to have a very different generational thrust. Gaw shows that Ponge's text is full of value-reflexive insights but that Ponge himself is an ambivalent figure. She finds that the dedication of Whitten's paintings inscribes them in a system of exchange. And, finally, the deliberate aesthetic meagerness of Banksy's Love Is in the Bin points to an emptiness at the heart of value. Institut für Kunstkritik series

Book excerpt: These volumes of Proceedings are the record of the 1999 ISES Solar World Congress, held in Jerusalem, Israel on the 45th Anniversary of the International Solar Energy Society. The Congress was held under the theme Solar is Renewable, adequately representing a meeting on the threshold of the 21st Century. The event also marks the 20th anniversary of the Israeli Section of ISES, founded in 1979 - the year ISES celebrated its Silver Jubilee. A business track under the title of Solar Means Business included presentations and discussions on market implementation of solar technology. The Congress further included two panel discussions and two workshops, dealing with WIRE (World-wide Information System for Renewable Energy) and with IPMVP (International Performance Measurement. These proceeding consist of the Keynote Papers and presented papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully updated edition of the classic reference in its field keeps professionals current with the latest technology and techniques in transmission of digital signals. Unlike other references on the subject, this volume is written specifically for engineers and focuses on practical systems and their application in actual design and implementation. It covers systems used throughout the world in chapters detailing the latest on basic system design, baseband transmissions, and digital radio and cable systems. Every chapter from the previous edition has been updated, and new information has been added on: Fiber-optic transmission and digital transmission networks; New digital transmission networks - including private-line, public, and personal communication networks - and integrated services digital networks; Trellis-coded modulation, spread spectrum, digital cross-connect systems, and source codes. Areas covered include analog-to-digital conversion, time-division multiplexing, digital modulation, network synchronization, and how to test, monitor, and control transmission systems. Extensive design examples and references drawn from common carriers, manufacturers, and the author's own experience clarify real-life applications in actual systems. The latest standards published by the CCITT, CCIR, and ANSI are provided, and many new sample problems in each chapter build understanding and expertise. Since digital transmission is used by virtually all communications systems today, this new edition is an essential refeence for all engineers, operators, supervisors, and managers who work in systems testing, operations, maintenance, planning, and research and development. It will also meet the needs of students taking digital communications courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the seismic methods used in geophys ical exploration for oil and gas in a comprehensive, non rigorous, mathematical manner. I have used it and its predecessors as a manual for short courses in seismic methods, and it has been extensively revised time and again to include the latest advances in our truly remark able science. I once called it, "Advanced Seismic Inter pretation," but the geophysicists who attended the courses always wondered when I was going to start dis cussing interpretation. They discovered at the end that I never did discuss interpretation as they knew it. No men tion was made of reflection picking, posting times, map ping, contouring, and things they already knew perfectly well. Instead, I discussed Fourier transforms, sampling theory, impulse responses, distortion operators, Wiener filters, noise in f-k space, velocity spectra, wave-equation migration, and direct detection of hydrocarbons as each of these topics appeared on the seismic scene. I wanted the geophysicists to think beyond the routine ofinterpre tation, to develop a better understanding of why seismic sections look as they do, to have a better feel for what digital processing is doing, for good or evil, to the seismic data. I attempted to stretch their minds. Whitehead said it best: "A mind once stretched by a new idea can never shrink to its former dimension. " May this book be a suc cessful mind-stretcher. R. L.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many industrial, power generation and chemical processes produce unwanted fine particulate material as a consequence of their operation. Electrostatic precipitation is a highly efficient method of removing entrained particulate contaminants from exhaust gases and is extensively used in these industries to limit particulate emissions. New legislation aimed at improving the environment by further limiting these discharges has resulted in the technique undergoing considerable development over the past decade, to the point where it has become the method of choice, over a wide range of applications, for limiting particulate discharges. In this new book, the editor has brought together an international team of contributors, mainly industrialists and consultants, to produce an authorative and practical guide to electrostatic precipitation. This book is of interest to all those in process industries or power generation and to academics concerned with gas cleaning and environmental issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neurology, Volume 1 presents the proceedings of the First International Congress of Neurological Sciences, held in Brussels, Belgium, on July 21–28, 1957. This book provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of neurology. Organized into 107 chapters, this compilation of papers begins with an overview of the significance of genetic factors in multiple sclerosis wherein its occurrence in more than one member of a family have a very limited value. This text then examines the two common disorders, namely, cervical spondylosis and disseminated sclerosis. Other chapters explain the mechanism of demyelination problem in considering the pathology of multiple sclerosis or any of the degenerative diseases of the nervous system. This book discusses as well the commonest types of headaches observed, including tension headache, migraine headache, post-traumatic headache, and those associated with hypertension. The final chapter deals with cerebellar ataxia, chronic respiratory infection, and telangiectasia. This book is a valuable resource for neurologists, psychiatrists, and neuropsychiatrists.
