Book excerpt: "A masterful portrait" (The Philadelphia Inquirer) from a Whitbread Award-winning biographer, and author of A Life of My Own. The novels of Thomas Hardy have a permanent place on every booklover's shelf, yet little is known about the interior life of the man who wrote them. A believer and an unbeliever, a socialist and a snob, an unhappy husband and a desolate widower, Hardy challenged the sexual and religious conventions of his time in his novels and then abandoned fiction to reestablish himself as a great twentieth-century lyric poet. In this acclaimed new biography, Claire Tomalin, one of today's preeminent literary biographers, investigates this beloved writer and reveals a figure as rich and complex as his tremendous legacy.

Book excerpt: Thomas Hardy saw himself, first and foremost, as a poet, and he wrote poetry throughout his prolific and acclaimed novel-writing years before announcing in 1896 that he would no longer write novels, much to the astonishment of his worldwide readership. Instead he went on to publish eight masterful volumes of poetry - ranging from lyrics and ballads to dramatic monologues and satire - and is now regarded as one of the greatest twentieth-century poets. Choosing the best verse from each volume, the Poems of Thomas Hardy is the perfect introduction to Hardy's lyrical, soul-searching and profoundly sincere poetry, covering subjects ranging from his grief at the death of his first wife to his experiences of war. This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition is edited and introduced by editor Ned Halley. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

Book excerpt: Thomas Hardy wrote some of the most moving and personal poems in his era and this collection brings together the best of his verse on life and love. Hardy's poems are by turn haunting, intense, songlike humerous and tender. From snatched lovers' meetings to the wreck of the Titanic from the death of a Dorest drummer boy in the Boer War to memories of his dead wife Emma, from ghosts, loss and longing to pleasure in landscape and weather, they tell the story of one of our best-loved writers, and the people and places that inspired him.

Book excerpt: CHAPTER I The person who, next to the actors themselves, chanced to know most of their story, lived just below ‘Top o’ Town’ (as the spot was called) in an old substantially-built house, distinguished among its neighbours by having an oriel window on the first floor, whence could be obtained a raking view of the High Street, west and east, the former including Laura’s dwelling, the end of the Town Avenue hard by (in which were played the odd pranks hereafter to be mentioned), the Port-Bredy road rising westwards, and the turning that led to the cavalry barracks where the Captain was quartered. Looking eastward down the town from the same favoured gazebo, the long perspective of houses declined and dwindled till they merged in the highway across the moor. The white riband of road disappeared over Grey’s Bridge a quarter of a mile off, to plunge into innumerable rustic windings, shy shades, and solitary undulations up hill and down dale for one hundred and twenty miles till it exhibited itself at Hyde Park Corner as a smooth bland surface in touch with a busy and fashionable world. To the barracks aforesaid had recently arrived the ---th Hussars, a regiment new to the locality. Almost before any acquaintance with its members had been made by the townspeople, a report spread that they were a ‘crack’ body of men, and had brought a splendid band. For some reason or other the town had not been used as the headquarters of cavalry for many years, the various troops stationed there having consisted of casual detachments only; so that it was with a sense of honour that everybody—even the small furniture-broker from whom the married troopers hired tables and chairs—received the news of their crack quality.

Book excerpt: Because Thomas Hardy’s poetry and fiction are so closely associated with Wessex, it is easy to forget that he was, in his own words, half a Londoner, moving between country and capital throughout his life. This self-division, Mark Ford says, can be traced not only in works explicitly set in London but in his most regionally circumscribed novels.

Book excerpt: A strong woman who recklessly throws away her strength, she is worse than a weak woman who has never had any strength to throw away. - Thomas Hardy ; Tess of the d'UrbervillesTess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented is a novel by Thomas Hardy. It initially appeared in a censored and serialised version, published by the British illustrated newspaper The Graphic in 1891, then in book form in three volumes in 1891, and as a single volume in 1892. Though now considered a major 19th-century English novel, even Hardy's fictional masterpiece, Tess of the d'Urbervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England.

From Several Perspectives Dr. Patil Analyses And Interprets Hardy'S Poetic Ouvre In An Altogether New Critical Idiom. Hardy, As The Author Argues, Is More Of A Poet Than Of A Novelist. In Fact, He Began His Literary Career As A Poet And Ended It In Becoming A Poet Of High Order. Only For The Sake Of Livelihood, He Had To Write Novels In The Middle Phase. Throughout His Life, He Was Extremely In Love With Poetry.Historically Speaking, Hardy Is Aptly Considered To Be 'A Transition Poet' As He Is The Last Victorian And The First Modern. Like G.M. Hopkins, He Made Several Experiments In Writing Poetry And Firmly Established The Modern Trend. These Things About The Poet Are Not At All Taken Seriously By Many Of His Critics; But, There Are Some Like George Saintsbury, Donald Davie, Philip Larkin And James G. Southworth Who Constantly Urge That Good Hardy Critics Are Wanted. The Present Book Explores, In-Depth, The Truth And Beauty Of Hardy'S Poetry. What The Earlier Critics Have Missed Is, Here, Pain¬Stakingly Unearthed I.E., Hardy'S Views On Love, Nature, Society, Religion, God And Universe. His Evolutionary Meliorism And Scientific Humanism Are Discussed At Length. His Robust Optimism And Melancholic Demeanour Are Also Pointed At, With A Greater Clarity And Confidence. All Those Who Want To Understand Modern Poetry Must Begin By Reading This Truly Remarkable Book. Dr. Mallikarjun Patil Was Born In 1967 In A Village In Belgaum District In Karnataka. He Graduated From Karnatak Arts College, Dharwar, And Obtained His M. A. Degree From Karnatak University. He Also Did His Ph.D., On The Existential Philosophy In Thomas Hardy'S Poetry In 1995.At Present, He Is A Lecturer In The Department Of Studies In English, In Gulbarga University, Gulbarga. He Is A Genuine Scholar And A Writer. He Writes Critical Articles And Poems. His Radio-Talks Are Regularly On Broadcast From Air, Gulbarga. His Research Articles Are Published In Encyclopaedias And Journals. His Another Critical Work Hardy'S Poetry And Existentialism Is In Press. His Sole Ambition In Life Is To Become A Full-Fledged Writer In English.
