After receiving his Ph.D. in physiological psychology at the University of Texas, he taught in the Psychology Department at the State University of New York in Courtland. He then became a Senior Research Scientist at American University's Center for Research in Social Systems, before receiving a grant from the National Institutes of Health to head up research at the District Government's 600 bed Rehabilitation Center for Alcoholics.
