Leibnitz, in planning the Berlin Academy, included the same idea in its scope, and thence it extended to other similar societies in Halle, Wittenberg, Vienna and St. Petersburg. An Evolution In Missions The idea in the minds of our first modern missionaries was, naturally, that their duty was solely to preach the gospel. This was, still is, and ever must be their chief function. But they were soon compelled by circumstances to broaden their ideas of duty. Who could see dense ignorance all around him without yearning to teach the people so that they might at least read the word of God and be able to communicate with each other in writing? Naturally it would quickly be perceived that the more plastic mind of childhood would profit most by such teaching. Hence the origin of schools, of the printing-press, and of translations of the Bible and of other books. While the R&A program is essential to the development and support of NASA's diverse set of space and Earth science missions, defining and articulating an appropriate scale for mission-enabling activities have posed a challenge throughout NASA's history. Field stations provide physical space for immersive research, hands-on learning, and new collaborations that are otherwise hard to achieve in the everyday bustle of research and teaching lives on campus. But the separation from university campuses that allows creativity to flourish also creates challenges. Sometimes, field stations are viewed as remote outposts and are overlooked because they tend to be away from population centers and their home institutions. This view is exacerbated by the lack of empirical evidence that can be used to demonstrate their value to science and society. Enhancing the Value and Sustainability of Field Stations and Marine Laboratories in the 21st Century summarizes field stations' value to science, education, and outreach and evaluates their contributions to research, innovation, and education. This report suggests strategies to meet future research, education, outreach, infrastructure, funding, and logistical needs of field stations.
