He completed various tours in Southwest Asia and finally deploys to Iraq where he witnessed the most significant "triggers" to his PTSD. In essence, the author elaborates that The Things We Carry is an invitation to bear witness to the spiritual truth that all of humankind are born and destined to engage in a "spiritual combat" on a daily basis since we have consecrated our existence to follow and serve Christ. Further, this book aims to engage everyone to take his or her part, no matter how trivial or gargantuan, in helping every victim of extreme traumatic stress heal by making them feel that they belong, by making the feel that they are loved.
