Such power, the power to determine your own destiny, isn't achieved by imposing your will on others. In fact, Ross Lawford explains, power based on authority, control, strength, and status is not only ineffective, it is usually short-lived or more illusion than reality. Drawing on psychology, theology, and business, Lawford outlines a new view of power based on authenticity and provides practical pointers for achieving your deepest desires without manipulation, coercion, or intimidation. He provides strategies for applying this new view of power in every aspect of your life-including your work, your family, and personal relationships.

Book excerpt: Do You Have Lift Off? Picture a NASA rocket lifting off, only seconds later to be millions of miles from earth. The force that makes such a feat possible is mind boggling. And it’s only a shadow of the power you have access to every day! It’s the awe-inspiring power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and it’s yours simply because God promises it. John Avant takes a breathtaking look at Philippians 3:10–14, your key to living every moment in the same strength Jesus had as He stepped out of the tomb. The path to authentic power is not easy, but it can be experienced even through the darkest times of raw pain. Discover how to live in God’s authentic power as you move toward an incredible future! Open the Floodgates Are you dry? Stuck in a routine? Looking for a boost in a measly cup of java? That’s living small. And it’s not for you. You were meant to live larger than life. To let God’s uncontainable power transform every ounce of who you are. Why? Because when Jesus Christ stepped out of the tomb, He gave you rights to the same power that conquers even death. You can’t see or touch it, earn it or achieve it. But you can live it today. How? Discover John Avant’s warm storytelling style as he unveils the secret to claiming Christ’s incredible power in your life. It’s too consuming, too accessible, too real to ever leave you the same. “John Avant’s Authentic Power reminds us that the greatest energy crisis in America is the result of the underutilized human soul, originally designed to run on high-octane, Holy Spirit–inspired power. Authentic Power teaches us to not just cope but triumph over life’s challenges.” Dan Cathy Owner/president, Chick-fil-A Story Behind the Book “After visiting persecuted churches in Vietnam , Belarus , and the Middle East , I was inspired. I saw something I just do not see today in the average American church—something so strong that the best descriptor is that it’s supernatural. It’s the power that comes from Christ. But I’m amazed that the greatest authentic power I see is wielded by those with the least power in the eyes of this world. Shortly after nearly being killed in the Middle East , I read Philippians 3:10–14 and discovered the words that unveil the secrets of real power. These are the words this book is based upon.” —John Avant From the Trade Paperback edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2017, a white supremacist rally at the University of Virginia forced many to consider how much progress had been made in a country that, nine years prior, had elected its first Black president. Beyond these racial flashpoints, the increasingly polarized nature of US politics has reignited debates around the meaning of identity, citizenship, and acceptance in America today. In this pioneering book, Khalilah L. Brown-Dean moves beyond the headlines to examine how contemporary controversies emanate from longstanding struggles over power, access, and belonging. Using intersectionality as an organizing framework, she draws on current tensions such as voter suppression, the Me Too movement, the Standing Rock protests, marriage equality, military service, the rise of the Religious Right, protests by professional athletes, and battles over immigration to show how conflicts over group identity are an inescapable feature of American political development. Brown-Dean explores issues of citizenship, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, and religion to argue that democracy in the United States is built upon the battle of ideas related to how we see ourselves, how we see others, and the mechanisms available to reinforce those distinctions. Identity Politics in the United States will be an essential resource for students and engaged citizens who want to understand the link between historical context, contemporary political challenges, and paths to move toward a stronger democracy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Masses are the Ruling Classes proposes the radical, yet seemingly innocuous view that social policy in the United States is determined by mass consent. Contemporary explanations of decision making in the US typically attribute power over policy making to a variety of hidden forces and illegitimate elites holding the masses innocent of their own problems. Yet the enormous openness of the society and near-universal suffrage sustain democratic consent as more plausible than the alternatives -- conspiracy, propaganda, usurpation, autonomous government, and imperfect pluralism. Contrary to prevailing explanations, government is not either autonomous or out of control, business and wealthy individuals have not usurped control of the nation, large segments of the population are not dispossessed of the vote or of a voice in public affairs, and the media has not formed a conspiracy with Hollywood and liberals to deny Americans their God-given freedoms. Despite the multitude of problems that the nation faces, its citizens are not oppressed. In this pithy yet provocative book, Epstein argues that Democracy in the United States is not progressive but is instead populist, and that the core of the populist ideology is romantic rather than pragmatic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eugene England (1933-2001)—one of the most influential and controversial intellectuals in modern Mormonism—lived in the crossfire between religious tradition and reform. This first serious biography, by leading historian Terryl L. Givens, shimmers with the personal tensions felt deeply by England during the turmoil of the late twentieth century. Drawing on unprecedented access to England's personal papers, Givens paints a multifaceted portrait of a devout Latter-day Saint whose precarious position on the edge of church hierarchy was instrumental to his ability to shape the study of modern Mormonism. A professor of literature at Brigham Young University, England also taught in the Church Educational System. And yet from the sixties on, he set church leaders' teeth on edge as he protested the Vietnam War, decried institutional racism and sexism, and supported Poland's Solidarity movement—all at a time when Latter-day Saints were ultra-patriotic and banned Black ordination. England could also be intemperate, proud of his own rectitude, and neglectful of political realities and relationships, and he was eventually forced from his academic position. His last days, as he suffered from brain cancer, were marked by a spiritual agony that church leaders were unable to help him resolve.
