Book excerpt: The Object of Zionism is a critical study of Zionist spatial planning and the architectural fabrication of the State of Israel from the early 20th century to the 1960s and '70s. Zvi Efrat scrutinizes Israel as a singular modernist project, unprecedented in its political and ethical circumstances and its hyper-production of spatial and structural experiments. Efrat explores the construction of the State of Israel in a book that promises to become a standard reference on Israeli architectural history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Goal of Zionism: An Address Delivered at the Zionist Demonstration Held Under the Auspices of the Federation of Canadian Zionist Societies in Drummond Hall, Montreal, March 3rd 1901 Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen: - I am cognizant of the fact that, while some of my listeners possess considerable knowledge about the aim and object of Zionism, there are here many others, who are as yet unitiated into the true meaning of Zionism. If they were conversant with the far-reaching ideals of the Zionist movement, there would not be any non-Zionists in our midst. To be imbued with the signification and the significance of Zionism and not be in sympathy with it, is like claiming to be standing on solid ground and be suspended in the air at the same time. They, who are in suspense about Zionism, will have to abandon the claim of standing on terra firma as far as the great Zionist problem is concerned. Man dreads that which is unknown to him. Very few are brave enough to venture out into a region with which they are unacquainted and about which they heard, as the dear old Bible says, "an evil report." It is the unacquaintance with the aspirations of Zionism which is responsible in most cases for the apathy to the cause. It is to the unitiated that I am addressing myself principally, and that will account for the historical aspect of Zionism, which I shall emphasize in the course of my address. Book excerpt: Literature Review from the year 2009 in the subject History - Asia, grade: 85, Ben Gurion University (Middle Eastern Studies), course: Milestones in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, language: English, abstract: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” Myth and ethos play a fundamental role in the formation and perpetuation of collective memory. They are most effective, as well as most dangerous, when they are held as truth without question. Furthermore, it is very difficult to uncover them if a population is not ready. According to David Castriota’s Myth, Ethos and Actuality, “ethos [is] the essential variable in the equation or analogy between myth and actuality.” Formed out of different components, memories and circumstances, ethos are often used for a special aim, for instance to justify certain actions and methods of a ruling class. Anita Shapira, a well known Israeli historian and professor at the Tel Aviv University, in her history Land and Power, The Zionist Resort to Force, 1881-1948 examines ethos, myths and narratives. Her voluminous study describes the ideological evolution of the Zionist movement from the First Aliyah (1881-1904) until the foundation of the State of Israel. The following analysis focuses on the main arguments and theories developed in Land and Power and examines them based on book reviews by renowned scholars. These scholars scrutinize the work from different perspectives and propose various criticisms, mainly concerning Shapira’s conception of ‘defensive ethos’ and ‘offensive ethos’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present voluime of translations from the Hebrew of Achad Ha-Am differs in character from the volume of Selected Essays published in 1912 by the Jewish Publication Society of America. The earlier selection was confined, by the express desire of the publishing Society, to essays dealing with the broader aspects of Judaism and Jewish thought; essays of a more polemical character, in which the author has defined his attitude to the modern Jewish national movement, were designedly omitted. Of the then further essays included in the present selection, only two belong to the former category, and these have been placed, out of their chronological order, at the end. The other eight essays all deal with one aspect or another of Zionism, and they form a series which will enable the English reader who is interested in the Zionist movement to follow its history under the guidance of one who is at the same time among its staunchest pillars and its most unsparing critics.
