Book excerpt: Neuropsychological Effects of the Psychiatric Disordersprovides a comprehensive review of the background and literature concerning effects of the psychiatric disorders on cognitive functions. It follows the classification of disease proposed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) and each condition is described in terms of its history, details regarding physical investigations of brain functioning in that disorder, and an extensive review and formulation of the implications of the disorder to cognitive functioning. A selective review of cognitive effects of treatments of the psychiatric disorders both from a pharmacological and physical standpoint is also included. Each chapter features a fully worked case of a disorder in association with the background and presentation of the patient, as well as a full listing of the patient's performance on specific neuropsychological tests. Techniques for differentiating dementia from depressive illness, as well as

Book excerpt: It is widely accepted that most psychiatric disorders are associated with cognitive impairment and that neuropsychological approaches can help unravel the mechanisms underlying brain function and help us develop a better understanding of these disorders. In this book, a panel of the world's leading experts describe the development of neuropsychological approaches to the investigation, description, measurement and management of a wide range of mental illnesses. Part One explains the rationale for examining neuropsychological processes within clinical disorders, leading into Part Two summarizing and critiquing the methodological approaches to study. Part Three covers each of the major psychiatric disorders and provides a summary of the neuropsychological findings for each condition. The final section brings together the perspectives of neuroscientists, psychiatrists and philosophers. Essential reading for all those studying the healthy as well as the disordered brain, The Neuropsychology of Mental Illness will appeal to specialists from the fields of mental health, psychology, clinical neuroscience and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great strides have been made in the past several decades in clarifying brain behavior relationships. Most of the research has focused on the direct effects of a brain injury on behavioral functioning. Only recently has attention been given to documenting the mechanisms by which the disruption of various organs and systems compromise cerebral integrity and ultimately how such disruption affects cognition and behavior. It is this relatively new topic of inquiry, medical neuropsychology, that comprises the subject of this book. As will be noted, the chapters are organized on a system-by-system basis. Each of the organ systems contributes in a unique and specialized fashion to maintaining the integrity of brain functioning. Thus, the chapters by Prigatano and Levin, Stanton, and Ryan address the consequences of disturbed energy regulation and oxygen supply. Other chapters, specifically those by Tarter, Edwards, and Van Thiel and by Hart and Kreutzer examine the effects on the brain when the liver and kidney cannot efficiently cata bolize or eliminate cerebrotoxic substances. The effects of metabolic disrup tion mediated through pituitary and thyroid gland mechanisms illustrate the complex and synergistic relationship among the various organs and systems and the brain. As discussed by Gordon, Lee, and Tamres, diverse intercorre lated processes regulate physical growth, cerebral specialization of function, and complex cognitive capacities. Beckwith and Tucker underscore the in terrelationships among cognitive, affective, behavioral, and neurophysio logical processes pertinent to thyroid functioning. The book concludes with discussions of three rather specialized topics of current interest.

Book excerpt: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.

Book excerpt: This important book describes the effects of a range of medical, psychological, and neurological conditions on brain functioning, specifically cognition. After a brief introduction of brain anatomy and function focusing on neural systems and their complex role in cognition, this book covers common disorders across several medical specialties, as well as injuries that can damage a variety of neural networks. The authors review findings on associations between these conditions and cognitive domains such as executive function, memory, attention, and learning, and describe possible causal pathways between diseases and cognitive impairment. Later chapters describe potential strategies for prevention, improvement, and treatment. The book’s topics include Cognition in affective disorders Cerebrovascular disease and cognition Cognitive sequelae of sepsis Traumatic brain injury and cognition Cognitive deficits associated with drug use Obstructive sleep apnea and cognition Cognitive function in pulmonary disease The Brain at Risk reflects the current interest in the links between body, mind, and brain, and will be of great value to researchers and practitioners interested in neuroscience, neuropsychology, and clinical research in the cognitive and behavioral consequences of brain injury and disease.
