Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE FIRST NOVEL BY THE AUTHOR OF WORD-OF-MOUTH BESTSELLER IF WOMEN ROSE ROOTED ' You and me against the world, you used to sing. In the days before it became you and me against each other.' Cat Munro - who has never taken a day off in her working life - quits her corporate job and starts flying lessons in a small plane over the Arizona desert, confronting her fear not only of death, but of life. Her mother, Laura, moves back to the Scottish village where she spent the first years of her marriage to Cat's abusive father. Though they are apart, the past connects mother and daughter, haunts them, binds them. From the excoriating heat of the Arizona desert to the misty flow of a Highland sea-loch, Sharon Blackie's soaring first novel presents us with the transformative power of landscape, and of storytelling, in women's lives. Above all, The Long Delirious Burning Blue is a story of courage, endurance and redemption. 'It is that rarity, a first novel that smacks of not merely confidence, but authority ... The ending is powerful, filmic, and achieving the kind of symmetry that novels often aspire to, but rarely reach.' The Scotsman

Book excerpt: Mase Campbell has earned a reputation as a skilled wagon master, heading up freight trains for Kavanaugh Freight. Then one night in 1874 in Corinne, Utah Territory, he is stopped in the street by someone asking him for a match, and shot to death. Those who saw the murder either do not come forward or admit no knowledge. Buck McCready, captured at ten years of age by Indians, rescued by Mase, and raised by him, wants to find out who killed Mase and why. But there is not time for investigation because Jock Kavanaugh, owner of the freight line, has committed to a freight wagon race from Corinne to Virginia City and he needs Buck to replace Mase as wagon master. Buck believes that Mase was murdered because of the competition and that the murderer will probably be on the train. Buck is right about one thing: someone in the wagon crew is willing to do whatever is necessary to see the Kavanaugh venture fail.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper measures the economic impact of climate on crops in Kenya. The analysis is based on cross-sectional climate, hydrological, soil, and household level data for a sample of 816 households, and uses a seasonal Ricardian model. Estimated marginal impacts of climate variables suggest that global warming is harmful for agricultural productivity and that changes in temperature are much more important than changes in precipitation. This result is confirmed by the predicted impact of various climate change scenarios on agriculture. The results further confirm that the temperature component of global warming is much more important than precipitation. The authors analyze farmers' perceptions of climate variations and their adaptation to these, and also constraints on adaptation mechanisms. The results suggest that farmers in Kenya are aware of short-term climate change, that most of them have noticed an increase in temperatures, and that some have taken adaptive measures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ray Bradbury was one of the first science fiction writers to achieve both popular success and critical acclaim. His books have not only sold millions of copies, but have been accepted as serious literature in an age when science fiction is still burdened by the stigma of being "pulp literature." This book, a revised and expanded Second Edition of the 1990 chapbook, examines the Ray Bradbury phenomenon through a structuralist reading of five stories from his major collection, The Illustrated Man, together with the narrative framework (the prologue and epilogue), which ties the stories together to form a complete work. The analysis will show some of Bradbury's major literary themes, and highlight the narrative techniques used in his short stories. A first-rate examination of one of science fiction's seminal authors. The Milford Series: Popular Writers of Today, Vol. 77.

Book excerpt: Émile Adolphe Verhaeren was a Belgian poet and art critic who wrote in the French language. He was one of the founders of the school of Symbolism and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature on six occasions. Verhaeren has at his command a rare and powerful poetic eloquence—a wealth of imagery, a depth of thought and a subtlety of expression which perhaps are not to be imprisoned behind the bars of a too rigid convention. The poems included here are from the volumes: "Les Villages Illusoires", "Les Heures Claires", "Les Apparus Dans Mes Chemins" and "La Multiple Splendeur".
