Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Last Illness of His Eminence Cardinal Wiseman I do not know when to date back for the com mencement Of the Cardinal's last illness. On Sun day the l5th of January he suddenly sunk so low that he was in imminent danger Of death for many hours. But though this complete exhaustion was most unexpected, he had been very far from well for some time before, and his state of health had been such as seriously to alarm his experienced medical advisers. A wound had, apparently spontaneously, opened in his right foot, which resulted in mor tification. The doctors had enjoined upon him complete rest and quiet, and had required that he should be treated as a man whom sickness prevented from attending to his work. Those who knew the Cardinal can form an idea Of the irksomeness Of con finement to his ever-active nature and fertile brain. It was very difficult for others to appreciate the in jury that he was doing to himself when he allowed them to bring their cares or their anxieties to him for his ready sympathy, or when they asked his as sistance in those duties Of his pastoral Office, in which he took such delight, but which now overtaxed his failing strength.
