So he travels to the outermost reaches of the land to find out what really happened. When he lands on the island he is met by a young woman, hair streaked with blood, raving like a lunatic. She is one of the sisters, who tell him the story of how his son died in the great hall of the Clan, the Norse gods, who were holding a party. But the festivities soon got out of hand, the guests began to argue with one another, and the mischievous shapeshifter Loki dealt a deadly blow. Set in a dystopian future that recalls Orwell and Zamyatin, Klas Ostergren has weaved a dizzying story of magnificent scope and foul play. Moving from the golden halls to the depths of the underworld, it is about one man's search for justice for his son in a world on the brink. A place where true love is so strong it can bring about the end of time.

A group of seven friends hunker down for what is considered to be the storm of the century. Jake and his family are spending the duration of Hurricane Elliot in the boarded-up home of his best friend Danny. As the storm outside rages on to catastrophic levels, something sinister is happening within the condo itself, a terror that none of the group would have ever suspected to happen- a terror that is beyond anyone's worst nightmares. Also included is the short story The Last Meal of George Mills. In this tale, Justin Joseph introduces readers to George Mills, a humble veteran that is stuck in a mediocre routine. Angry at the world and all that it has become, George's only solace is food and his weekly meal at his local diner. A known regular at the diner, things take an interesting turn for George when he orders something other than his normal regular meal that he normally gets every week. Something exciting happens, something that he cannot explain. The Last Meal of George Mills is a testament of time, showing the reader that even in our darkest hours, there is still light, there is still hope.

Book excerpt: Hurricane Parties- A Tradition for many If you have never run to the shores to feel the brunt of hurricane wind, you've never experienced one of the biggest thrills in living near the Gulf Coast. Salt-water spraying from the pounding surf is exhilarating in itself. Nature's Wonders are also Nature's Follies. Needless to say, as many can attest, braving the eye of a powerful hurricane storm can be utter foolery. Hurricanes, are nothing new to residents of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. For decades and even centuries, many Coast families have had the tradition of gathering with their family or friends in the comfort of the grandparents home or the dwelling that was deemed most safe and comfortable. Folks would gather together seeking one and other's familiar company. It was much like a family reunion - each would bring their treasure bundles and boxes of goodies to spend the night through. There was always plenty of food and cakes, cookies, and candies lending an air of celebration. - And there was always the hidden or open bottles of "Kickapoo Joy Juice." Fears would be quelled, particularly of the young ones who would listen to past stories boastfully told of hurricanes gone by. Usually the men would gather in the living room as the women posted themselves in the kitchen, and the kids ran helter-skelter. Radios and televisions were made in good order and kept on as background noises to the nervous chatter and the extended greetings with new arrivals. Telephone calls were made to let everyone know who was present and accounted for and at what location they could be found. There was always the need for someone's medication, a particular battery size, one of the kid's favorite toys - that would cause one of the young men to rush out to brave the early awakening storm - just to have an opportunity to refresh and get to a store - or home to pick up "vital" supplies. Before the errand boy's departure, one of the older men would always slip a wad of one dollar bills in his pocket with a wink that needed no explanation.

Book excerpt: A panoramic novel set in New York City during the catastrophic blizzard of February 1978 On the night of February 6, 1978, an overwhelming nor'easter struck the city of New York. On that night, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, in a penthouse apartment of the stately Apelles, a crowd gathered for a grand party. And on that night Mr. Albert Haynes Caldwell—a partner emeritus at Swank, Brady & Plescher; Harvard class of '26; father of three; widower; atheist; and fiscal conservative—hatched a plan to fake a medical emergency and toss himself into the Hudson River, where he would drown. Jack Livings's The Blizzard Party is the story of that night.

Book excerpt: The English-language debut of one of the most thrilling and accomplished young Mexican writers Winner of the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute's Tanslation Prize Longlisted for the National Book Award Shortlisted for the Booker Prize Winner of the Internationaler Literaturpreis New York Public Library Best Books of 2020 Chicago Public Library Best Book of 2020 The Witch is dead. And the discovery of her corpse has the whole village investigating the murder. As the novel unfolds in a dazzling linguistic torrent, with each unreliable narrator lingering on new details, new acts of depravity or brutality, Melchor extracts some tiny shred of humanity from these characters—inners whom most people would write off as irredeemable—forming a lasting portrait of a damned Mexican village. Like Roberto Bolano’s 2666 or Faulkner’s novels, Hurricane Season takes place in a world saturated with mythology and violence—real violence, the kind that seeps into the soil, poisoning everything around: it’s a world that becomes more and more terrifying the deeper you explore it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ten-year-old girl learns the importance of family and community in this tale of love and hope set during the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Armani Curtis can think about only one thing: her tenth birthday. All her friends are coming to her party, her mama is making a big cake, and she has a good feeling about a certain wrapped box. Turning ten is a big deal to Armani. It means she’s older, wiser, more responsible. But when Hurricane Katrina hits the Lower Nines of New Orleans, Armani realizes that being ten means being brave, watching loved ones die, and mustering all her strength to help her family weather the storm. A powerful story of courage and survival, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere celebrates the miraculous power of hope and love in the face of the unthinkable. Praise for Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere “Lamana goes for and achieves realism here, carefully establishing the characters and setting before describing in brutal detail, beyond what is typical in youth literature, the devastating effects of Katrina—loss of multiple family members, reports of attacks in the Superdome, bodies drifting in the current and less-than-ideal shelter conditions. An honest, bleak account of a national tragedy sure to inspire discussion and research.” —Kirkus Reviews “I recommend the book because I think it does a good job of capturing what life was like in New Orleans both before and after Katrina and because Armani’s journey will give readers a lot to think about and discuss. But parents will want to know that it doesn’t flinch when describing the death and destruction that hit New Orleans during that time and be cautious with younger, sensitive readers.” —Cindy Hudson, author of Book by Book
