Book excerpt: Every individual is entitled to quality health care, but medical professionals are not always equipped with the training and knowledge to provide the necessary care to patients -- especially when it comes to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities and individuals with differences of sex development (DSD). For this reason, the University of Louisville School of Medicine established eQuality (www.louisville.edu/medicine/equality/), an inclusive LGBTQ/DSD-affected health training program that was integrated across the medical student curriculum. After the launch of this program, the university realized that its students needed more clinical skills training to translate classroom learning into patient care. The eQuality Toolkit addresses those gaps by training medical students to care for LGBTQ/DSD-affected communities. These patients experience repeated instances of stigma and discrimination related to their identities, with consequent health and healthcare disparities that knowledgeable healthcare providers can help to address. The manual presents a practical and fundamental approach to LGBTQ/DSD health and clinical care, and it addresses several categories, including gender-affirming care, inclusive communication skills, and consideration for youth and family planning. The book, which has been used to train medical students in an educational setting, also functions independently as a clinical skills supplement for practicing providers. Most importantly, this resource emphasizes that providers who have open and thoughtful conversations with all patients will help ensure that quality and effective health care is provided.

The White Ally Toolkit Workbook gives people concrete guidance about how to respond a wide variety of statements that racism-denying white folks make everyday. In addition, the workbook presents a sequenced curriculum that an ally can use if they want to purposefully change someone in the circle of influence as well as reflection and self-assessment tools that will help allies see themselves more clearly. These tools help allies refine their interactions with others so they can move the needle on the large-scale racism denial among the whites about American's most pressing and long-standing problem.

Book excerpt: A fast and engaging read, Equity helps leaders create more inclusive organizations using human-centered design and behavior change principles. Even the most passionate advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion have been known to treat equity as the middle child—the concept they skip over to get to the warm, fuzzy feelings of inclusion. But Minal Bopaiah shows throughout this book that equity is critical if organizations really want to leverage differences for greater impact. Equity allows leaders to create organizations where employees can contribute their unique strengths and collaborate better with peers. Bopaiah explains how leaders can effectively raise awareness of systemic bias and craft new policies that lead to better outcomes and lasting behavioral changes. This book is rich in real-world examples, such as managing partners at a consulting firm who learn to retell their personal stories of success by crediting their systemic advantages and news managers at NPR who redesign their processes to support greater diversity among news sources. This slender book expands DEI past human resources initiatives and shows how leaders can embed equity into core business functions like marketing and communications. Filled with humor, heart, and pragmatism, Equity is a guidebook for change, answering the question of how that so many leaders are asking today.
