Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize–winner Larry McMurtry writes novels set in the American heartland, but his real territory is the heart itself. His gift for writing about women—their love for reckless, hopeless men; their ability to see the good in losers; and their peculiar combination of emotional strength and sudden weakness—makes The Desert Rose the bittersweet, funny, and touching book that it is. Harmony is a Las Vegas showgirl with the best legs in town. At night she's a lead dancer in a gambling casino; during the day she raises peacocks. She throws her love away on second-rate men, but wakes up in the morning full of hope. She's one of a dying breed of dancers, faced with fewer and fewer jobs and an even bleaker future. Yet, she maintains a calm cheerfulness in that arid neon landscape of supermarkets, drive-in wedding chapels, and all-night casinos. While Harmony's star is fading, her beautiful, cynical daughter Pepper's is on the rise. But Harmony remains wistful and optimistic through it all. She is the unexpected blossom in the wasteland, the tough and tender desert rose. Hers is a loving portrait that only Larry McMurtry could render.

As Annalee and her mother travel to join him in Nevada, their joy turns to ashes. They're unprepared for the savage mountain winter that traps them in a desperate struggle for survival. At this critical moment, lawman Brett Wilder arrives in town. He's looking for the gunslinger who crippled his father—and he suspects Jack. When Annalee and Brett meet as they each search for Jack, they must face what they believe about the sovereignty of God, justice, and mercy. They also must discover whether their growing love for one another will melt like snow into an icy mountain stream or bloom like a rose in the desert.

Book excerpt: I was born in a wonderful country Azerbaijan which means The Land of Fires. It’s amazing country which is a mix of different cultures. This multiculturalism is forging the poets and musicians! The most impression I got in my childhood was rock music. Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, Grand Funk and many, many others became my musical idols. Long hair and jeans became the symbol of protest against the existing Soviet ideology among youth movement and I was part of it. Beginning from 1998 till 2002 I travelled to many European countries and twice been to USA. My long staying in Montana and in D.C. gave me possibility to describe these brilliant regions and their cordial people in my novel the Desert Rose. I was impressed by meeting with bishop Jim (peace be upon him) and who became one of the main characters in my novel! Being historian I was deeply studying world religions. No religion calling for violence! And it’s not necessarily to be religious for being spiritual! My main characters have many common features with me. They are open – hearted, they love the life and human beings. Despite of their belonging to different nations and religions they are the citizens of the world, and it’s refl ecting my own essence! Each person is a different Universe and I’m quite confi dent that the treasure inside each of us should be revealed early or late!

In the weeks to follow, thoughts and feelings arise within her she never knew she had, pushing and guiding her to this new and mysterious man. When their worlds abruptly collide, their attraction, at first ignored, becomes something much more powerful, stirring deeply within each of them. Now, as the golden band on her left hand sets her life, she must decide if this man is worth the cost of her reputation and marriage. But when Lewis becomes suspicious, Marie will be faced with the choice to stand firm or fall into the strong arms of a man she was destined to love.

Book excerpt: Desert Rose tells the thrilling story of two young women who leave England to take up teaching posts in Abu Dhabi. Each is running away from something. Clare Anderson -beautiful and ambitious but heartbroken after discovering her husband's affair. Melinda Mann - desperate to escape the clutches of monotonous suburbia. Melinda pursues Walid Harid, a multi-millionaire who can offer her the privilege and wealth she has sought for so long. She is unprepared, however, for the savage opposition from his powerful family and their devilish workings behind the scenes to obstruct their relationship. Clare meets James Cameron, an American who has fled to the Middle East to escape his domineering parents. Their love is immediate and passionate, but not without its obstacles. Meanwhile, Sheikh Fariz bin Hani offers her infinite kindness, sensitivity and understanding, but their happiness is marred by the fact that they can never truly be together. The mysterious exoticism of the East, unimagined power and the vast riches of the hot desert sands, change Clare's and Melinda's lives forever in ways that they would never have dreamed possible.
