Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first comprehensive study on the concept of ritual purity in the Dead Sea Scrolls since the full publication of the legal material from Qumran. Utilizing an independent approach to the relevant documents from Qumran, this study discusses the primary and secondary literature on the five major categories of impurity in the scrolls (i.e., diseases, clean/unclean animals, corpses, bodily discharges, and sexual misdeeds). This examination is supported by a comparison between the scrolls’ purity legislations and their biblical counterparts. The book culminates with a comparison between the purity rulings in the scrolls and a diachronic reading of the explicit agreements and disagreements found therein. The result is a far more comprehensive and nuanced interpretation than has been previously offered.

Book excerpt: The Orion Center Bibliography of the Dead Sea Scrolls (1995-2000) is the fourth official Scrolls bibliography, following bibliographies covering the periods 1948-1957 (W. S. LaSor), 1958-1969 (B. Jongeling), and 1970-1995 (F. García Martínez and D. W. Parry). The current interest in the Scrolls, with at least two journals dedicated to these texts, has led to a proliferation of secondary literature, theses, and electronic publications. The Orion Center Bibliography contains over 3000 entries, including approximately 600 reviews, gathered from the École Biblique et Archéologique Française in Jerusalem, from on-line databases, and from the authors themselves. This work is based on the bibliography compiled by the Orion Center for the Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jerusalem, and includes reviews, journal articles, and electronic publications, a text index and a subject index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dead Sea Scrolls after Fifty Years is being published to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the first scrolls at Qumran. The two-volume set contains a comprehensive set of cutting-edge articles on a wide range of topics that are archaeological, historical, literary, sociological, or theological in character. Since the discovery of the first scrolls in 1947 an overwhelming number of studies has been published. Now, half a century later, nearly all scrolls found have been published in critical editions, and scholars can begin to assess the true relevance of the scrolls for the study of the Bible, Second Temple Judaism, and Early Christianity. The contributors to these volumes form an international team of leading specialists in the field. They have written critical surveys of particular aspects of Dead Sea Scrolls research, focusing on significant developments, theories and conclusions, while also indicating directions for future study.

Book excerpt: Among the newly published texts of the Qumran Library there are a good number with eschatological content. Some of these texts relate the eschatological activity of certain figures who seem to play an important role in the events of the eschaton. This study explores these figures. The material of this study is divided into two main parts. The first is analytical, in which the related textual material is investigated, each passage in turn. The second, systematic section contains the evaluation and discussion of the data provided by the analyses of the first part. These analyses are especially relevant for scholars of both the Old and New Testaments and for all those interested in early Jewish thought at the turn of the era.

Book excerpt: Before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Ben Sira was the only Hebrew wisdom text from the late Second Temple period. The Qumran scrolls provide an abundance of previously unknown Hebrew sapiential material. Discerning Wisdom provides a systematic overview of all the Qumran texts that are commonly identified as wisdom compositions. This literature raises issues such as the incorporation of apocalypticism and Torah piety into the sapiential tradition. The Dead Sea Scrolls offer crucial evidence for understanding the wisdom of the late Second Temple period and the reception of traditional wisdom in Early Judaism.
