Book excerpt: A stunning investigation of the life and legend of Mexican kingpin Joaquín Archivaldo “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera, building on Noah Hurowitz’s revelatory coverage for Rolling Stone of El Chapo’s federal drug-trafficking trial. This is the true story of how El Chapo built the world’s wealthiest and most powerful drug-trafficking operation, based on months’ worth of trial testimony and dozens of interviews with cartel gunmen, Mexican journalists and political figures, Chapo’s family members, and the DEA agents who brought him down. Over the course of three decades, El Chapo was responsible for smuggling hundreds of tons of cocaine, marijuana, heroin, meth, and fentanyl around the world, becoming in the process the most celebrated and reviled drug lord since Pablo Escobar. El Chapo waged ruthless wars against his rivals and former allies, plunging vast areas of Mexico into unprecedented levels of violence, even as many in his home state of Sinaloa continued to view him as a hero. This unputdownable book, written by a great new talent, brings El Chapo’s exploits into a focus that previous profiles have failed to capture. Hurowitz digs in deep beyond the legends and delves into El Chapo’s life and legacy—not just the hunt for him, revealing some of the most dramatic and often horrifying moments of his notorious career, including the infamous prison escapes, brutal murders, multi-million-dollar government payoffs, and the paranoia and narcissism that led to his downfall. From the evolution of organized crime in Mexico to the militarization of the drug war to the devastation wrought on both sides of the border by the introduction of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, this book is a gripping and comprehensive work of investigative, on-the-ground reporting.

Book excerpt: When talking about law offenders, terrorist, syndicates, and drug lords, numerous names or groups might come to mind. In Mexico one name resonates clearly, and that is Joaquin Archivaldo Guzman Loera. Guzman is a Mexican drug kingpin who leads the criminal organization Sinaloa Cartel, named for to the Mexican Pacific coast state of Sinaloa. Juaquin Guzman is also popular with the codename "El Chapo Guzman" or "The Shorty Guzman" because of his stature of 5 ft. 6 in (1.68 m). In 2003, he earned his reputation of being the top Mexican drug lord after the arrest of Osiel Cardenas of the Gulf Cartel, rival of Guzman and considered as the world's most influential drug barons by the United States Department of the Treasury. El Chapo Guzman was the second most powerful individual in Mexico next to Carlos Slim. Guzman was considered the 10th wealthiest man in Mexico in 2011 and held the 1,140th position throughout the globe, having a net worth of about US$1 billion. US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) believes that he has already surpassed the power and influence of Pablo Escobar, who is considered the godfather of the drug world. The Chicago Crime Commission called Guzman Public Enemy Number One in 2013 for the impact of his criminal link in Chicago, although there was no proof that Guzman went in that city. Al Capone was last person to obtain such notoriety in 1930. Guzman was seized in Guatemala in 1993, extradited, and punished with 20 years imprisonment in Mexico for assassination and drug trading. He was able to break free from a federal maximum-security prison in 2001 after inducing the prison guards. Because of this, he became wanted by the United States, the government of Mexico, and by INTERPOL. There was a US$5 million prize granted by the US for any information towards to his capture. On the other hand, the Mexican government provided a 60 million pesos reward, or about US$3.8 million, for details on the whereabouts of Guzman. On February 22, 2014, El Chapo Guzman was arrested in Mexico by the Mexican authorities. He was located inside a fourth-floor room at 608 Avenida del Mar beachfront Miramar condominium Mazatlan, Sinaloa and was seized without a gunshot fired. On July 11, 2015 Guzman was able to break out of prison once again. In this eBook, the escape of El Chapo will be highlighted, along with his biographical information.

Book excerpt: A blend of Manhunt, Killing Pablo, and Zero Dark Thirty, Andrew Hogan and Douglas Century’s sensational investigative high-tech thriller—soon to be a major motion picture from Sony—chronicles a riveting chapter in the twentieth-century drug wars: the exclusive inside story of the American lawman and his dangerous eight-year hunt that captured El Chapo—the world’s most wanted drug kingpin who evaded the law for more than a decade. Every generation has a larger-than-life criminal: Jesse James, Billy the Kid, John Dillinger, Al Capone, John Gotti, Pablo Escobar. But each of these notorious lawbreakers had a "white hat" in pursuit: Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett, Eliot Ness, Steve Murphy. For notorious drug lord Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán-Loera—El Chapo—that lawman is former Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Andrew Hogan. In 2006, fresh out of the D.E.A. Academy, Hogan heads west to Arizona where he immediately plunges into a series of gripping undercover adventures, all unknowingly placing him on the trail of Guzmán, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, a Forbes billionaire and Public Enemy No. 1 in the United States. Six years later, as head of the D.E.A.’s Sinaloa Cartel desk in Mexico City, Hogan finds his life and Chapo’s are ironically, on parallel paths: they’re both obsessed with the details. In a recasting of the classic American Western on the global stage, Hunting El Chapo takes us on Hogan’s quest to achieve the seemingly impossible, from infiltrating El Chapo’s inner circle to leading a white-knuckle manhunt with an elite brigade of trusted Mexican Marines—racing door-to-door through the cartel’s stronghold and ultimately bringing the elusive and murderous king-pin to justice. This cinematic crime story following the relentless investigative work of Hogan and his team unfolds at breakneck speed, taking the reader behind the scenes of one of the most sophisticated and dangerous counter-narcotics operations in the history of the United States and Mexico.

Book excerpt: The diminutive Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known universally by his nickname of 'El Chapo' ('Shorty' in Spanish), is the highest-profile narco-terrorist since the demise of Pablo Escobar in the 1990s. Loera began work at the age of nine as a gomero - a farmhand harvesting opium - and as he grew up he shot and murdered his way to the top. In 2009, he made the Forbes annual billionaires list and, before his capture by Mexican marines in 2016, the Sinaloa cartel which he commanded was turning over more than $11 billion in annual sales to North America, supplying more than 10 per cent of all illegal narcotics used on that continent. This made him Public Enemy Number One in the USA. El Chapo was among the most powerful individuals in the world. In Sinaloa, he was a folk hero and the subject of popular songs known as 'narcocorridos'. Meanwhile, America's Drug Enforcement Agency (the DEA) had sworn to hunt him down. Featuring the remarkable tale of El Chapo's arrest in Guatemala in 1993, how he continued to run his cartel from his cell in a Mexican jail and his subsequent escape in a prison laundry cart, along with his recapture in 2014, and ultimate extradition to the US for the Trial of the Century, this book gives you the inside track on the dog-eat-dog world of international drugs trafficking.

Grayson, author of Mexico: Narco-Violence and a Failed State? The dense hills of Sinaloa, Mexico, were home to the most powerful drug lord since Pablo Escobar: Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. Guzman was among the world’s ten most wanted men and also appeared on Forbes magazine’s 2009 billionaire list. With his massive wealth, his army of professional killers, and a network of informants that reached into the highest levels of government, catching Guzman was once considered impossible Newly isolated by infighting amongst the cartels, and with Mexican and DEA authorities closing in, El Chapo was vulnerable as never before. Newsweek correspondent Malcolm Beith had spent years reporting on the drug wars and followed the chase with full access to senior officials and exclusive interviews with soldiers and drug traffickers in the region, including members of Guzman’s cartel. The Last Narco combines fearless reporting with the story of El Chapo’s legendary rise from a poor farming family to the “capo” of the world’s largest drug empire. “The Last Narco gracefully captures the heroic struggle of those who dare to stand up to the cartels, and the ways those cartels have tragically corrupted every aspect of Mexican law enforcement.” —Laura Bickford, producer, Traffic

Book excerpt: When we talk about the lord of all the drug lords in the world, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman comes top in the list. He is one of the richest and most influential drug lords in the world and was the former leader of the famous Sinaloa Cartel, a powerful criminal organization that was named after the place it was formed, the Mexican Pacific coast state of Sinaloa. He is widely known around the world as a top drug kingpin in Mexico and the most powerful drug lord/ trafficker in the world by the U.S. Department of Treasury. Just like the old saying goes, a drug lord has many connections and ways to escape from real danger. There were many attempts made by the government to end the illegal activities and wrongdoings of El Chapo, but with no success. Joaquin Guzman was untouchable before, most especially when he was still leading the Sinaloa Cartel, which transported multi-ton cocaine and drug shipments from Colombia through Mexico and down to the United States, which is the world’s top consumer of cocaine.
