Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Australasian Medical Gazette, Vol. 26: The Journal of the Austalasian Branches of the British Medical Association; From January to December, 1905 When worked out, this gives us an average yield of grammes (865 grains) starch in the barley-water from two teaspoonfuls pearl barley. Every 100 parts by weight of barley yield an average of 31°l parts by weight of starch in the barley-water. Pearl barley contains about 78 per cent. Of its weight as starch, and, calculating from this, we find that 40 per cent. Of the total amount of starch in the original barley is extracted in the above process, and enters into the barley-water which is strained off for use. Two experiments were made with rice-water, using an exactly similar recipe. Two heaped teaspoonfuls weighed on an average 21 gm. Book excerpt: "Telling as much a social, educational, and cultural story as institutional history, this detailed account chronicles the ideological patterns, internal and countrywide conflicts, and student experiences at the University of Melbourne from 1850 to 1939. The daily life of staff, professors, and students are recounted during times of turmoil and peace in Australia, including the depression of the 1890s and World War I. The account offers a window into the pedagogical conflicts and research achievements of one of Australia's oldest continuing educational institutions."

Book excerpt: Catchy phrases, chants at cricket matches and jingles which consumers just can't get out of their heads-the best advertising stands out because it is creative, clever and, most importantly, funny. Advertising in Australia can be traced back to the early 1900s, when spruikers wooed the public with appeals to vanity, health and patriotism. By the time Australia had endured two World Wars, the Depression, economic downturns, political upheavals and direct confrontations, the advertising industry had not only survived, but had become a multi-billion dollar industry, with an enormous influence over people's everyday lives and their spending habits. But Wait, There's Morea is the first detailed history of the Australian advertising industry, exploring its development over the course of the twentieth century from a disorganised group of individuals selling newspaper space to a multi-billion dollar enterprise run by giant transnationals. It follows the admen and adwomen who worked to convert their audiences into consumers and examines their ongoing quest for legitimacy in the face of new technologies and an increasingly sophisticated and media-savvy audience.
