Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anti-Gallican, or Standard of British Loyalty, Religion and Liberty: Including a Collection of the Principal Papers, Tracts, Speeches, Poems, and Songs, That Have Been Published on the Threatened Invasion; Together With Many Original Pieces on the Same Subject Mr. Ti KE LL, of Barninghamddall, near greta-bridge, after stating the dis. Advantages which he laboured under in addressing the Meeting, after that display of eloquence which they had just heard, observed, that nothing but a sense f that duty he owed to his Country and himself at this most important period, could have called forth any talents which he posses sed; but feeling as' he did, the arduous contest in which we were soon to be en gaged, he asserted it to be the sacred duty of every Englishman, to step forward 'in whatever way he should consider himself ofany use to his Country. Nlr. T. Then stated the purpose for which the meeting was called; namely, to Address his Ma jesty, and pledge themselves, that with hand and heart they would join 'to defeat the ambitious projects of an inveterate enemy, against the very existence of our Country. After expressing his belief in the loyalty and courage ofbritons, he said, Our Liberties, our Constitution, our National Independence have been me naced; and he that will meanlywkulk behind the common danger, -he that will not shed his blood in such a cause, must either be a traitor, or stand confessed as a wretch whose soul was never animated by a single spark of that pure flame which led cur ancestors to glory - If such a wretch there be, may he sink into obli = vion. - Ifsuch a traitor lives among us may his fate be proportioned to his crime -may he enjoy the object of his wishes; - may he _taste the baneful fruits of the tree of Gallic liberty - may its poisonous juice corrode his very heard-and its ace cursed venom dry up the springs of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservative culture in the Romantic period should not be understood merely as an effort to preserve the old regime in Britain against the threat of revolution. Instead, conservative thinkers and writers aimed to transform British culture and society to achieve a stable future in contrast to the destructive upheavals taking place in France. Kevin Gilmartin explores the literary forms of counterrevolutionary expression in Britain, showing that while conservative movements were often inclined to treat print culture as a dangerously unstable and even subversive field, a whole range of print forms - ballads, tales, dialogues, novels, critical reviews - became central tools in the counterrevolutionary campaign. Beginning with the pamphlet campaigns of the loyalist Association movement and the Cheap Repository in the 1790s, Gilmartin analyses the role of periodical reviews and anti-Jacobin fiction in the campaign against revolution, and closes with a fresh account of the conservative careers of Robert Southey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
