Book excerpt: TAPESTRY OF WORDS is a telling of a life in progress that spans almost 60 years. It is your life as much as the author's because everyone fits in the spaces between her words. Chris has written poetry since after the tragic death of her mother, and topics include religion, children, nature, life, and death. Her book is a small sampling since she has given away many poems without saving them. She lists her poems by theme rather than the chronological order of events to make it easier for the reader to navigate.Poetry is catharsis with the intent to elicit an emotion in a way that touches hearts and souls. The beauty of poetry is that each reader interprets its words to meet their unique needs, and the choice of words or rhyme accomplishes it. Each collection in her book has meaning; she fills the pages with happiness, humor, sadness, turmoil, and life and death. It is primarily free verse which allows full expression without limitations. Life events have inspired her writing and have been the catalyst for self-expression. Each poem is a true story, such as her daughter's adoption and her son's death. She weaves her words as tenderly as the feelings each express. Chris is a runner, and her inspiration comes from being outdoors. She believes that nature is healing, and it has become the canvas upon which she writes. May this book help you in the same way that writing it has helped her.

Book excerpt: For me, poetry is the oddest form of writing. Sometimes the words come all by themselves, triggered by an event, an image, a thought, even a book I've read or movie I've seen. Something triggers the mind, and words and images suddenly, uncontrollably, flow. Other times, it's deliberate. I sit down to write a poem about something or someone. Sometimes that works out well, sometimes, when I'm finished, I throw out the last few hours work and go have a cup of tea. My favorites are those that write themselves, leaving me to do some minor clean-up, spelling adjustments, a word here or there, nothing more. The image has written itself out and the demon has put down the pen, returning control to me. However, suddenly grabbing a pen and scribbling for minutes or hours is somewhat disconcerting to those around you, especially if they thought they were having a conversation with you at the time. I've also found that running alongside the impulse to write, comes an impulse to create on the artistic side. I develop fascinations with a type of art, and explore it for days, or months, or, in some cases, for years. As the two seem to go hand in hand at times, I've chosen to intersperse these poems with some of the art that I did around the same time as the poetry. Sometimes the two focus on a common theme, sometimes they run, unrelated but in parallel. Sometimes the art leads the poetry, sometimes the reverse. Both seem to be driven by demons or some sort, with their sudden onsets, amazing intensity, and wide-ranging curiosity. Something always needs to see what comes next. During the early years, tapestries were a re-occurring interest. There are some who believe that each life is a tapestry, woven on the loom of the Fates, each thread spun by Clotho, measured by Lachesis, and ended at death with a click of Atropos' scythe-sharp shears. The choices made along the way define the color, hue and saturation of the threads. In a way, that's how it always begins, with a new interest in creating art, laying out the weave and weft, planning the crossings, over and under. Think of the crossings as decision points of life; under, you decide to go left, over, and you choose right. For simple things the weaving is easy to plan and follow. As I have found, the more complex the tapestry the more problematic the questions of decision, when the over cannot follow the under and maintain the pattern. At such times in life, the weave is in danger of loosing its strength and cohesion, and the tapestry itself is forced to change. Other times, a tapestry is started, and then, for no apparent reason, simply abandoned. It is amid the writing of words, the weaving of lines on paper, decisions made or not, the choosing of one pathway to follow, and another to walk away from, that a life passes. And so, I give you the tapestry from the early years of demon scribbles: words and images, thoughts and visions.

In order to support her little brother, Thaddeus, and her grandmother, she relies upon her skills in beetle-wing embroidery that have been passed down to her through generations of Indian women. When a stranger appears with the news that Thaddeus is now Baron Sunderson and must travel to England to take his place as a nobleman, Ottilie is shattered by the secrets that come to light. Despite her growing friendship with Everett Scott, friend to Ottilie's English grandmother and aunt, she refuses to give up her brother. Then tragedy strikes, and she is forced to make a decision that will take Thaddeus far from death and herself far from home. But betrayal and loss lurk in England, too, and soon Ottilie must fight to ensure Thaddeus doesn't forget who he is, as well as find a way to stitch a place for herself in this foreign land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step back in time to seventeenth-century Paris with Thérèse, a talented young girl who lives and works at the Gobelins Manufactory, where Europe’s greatest artisans make tapestries and luxury objects for King Louis XIV. Even though girls are not trained on the great looms there, Thérèse practices on a small one at home and dreams of becoming a royal weaver someday. This charming story follows Thérèse as she carries out an ambitious plan with the help of family, friends, and the artisans of the Gobelins. The intricate craft of tapestry weaving is illuminated, and surprises await Thérèse, her parents and brothers, and even the king himself. Children’s book author Alexandra S. D. Hinrichs here breathes vivid life into a delightful tale full of fun twists and an appealing cast of characters. Original paintings by award-winning artist Renée Graef playfully illustrate the book, as well as the many steps involved in the creation of the famous Gobelins tapestries, from dyeing wool and making silver thread, to painting and copying the elaborate designs, to the delicate art of weaving. Thérèse’s fictional adventures are inspired by real people, the actual Gobelins Manufactory, and a beautiful tapestry that hangs today in the J. Paul Getty Museum.
