Book excerpt: Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of the British writer Violet Paget (14 October 1856 - 13 February 1935). She is remembered today primarily for her supernatural fiction and her work on aesthetics. An early follower of Walter Pater, she wrote over a dozen volumes of essays on art, music, and travel.Violet Paget was born in France on 14 October 1856, at Chteau St Leonard, Boulogne, to British expatriate parents, Henry Ferguson Paget and Matilda Lee-Hamilton (ne Abadam). Violet Paget was the half-sister of Eugene Jacob Lee-Hamilton (1845-1907) by her mother's first marriage, and from whose surname she adapted her own pseudonym. Although she primarily wrote for an English readership and made many visits to London, she spent the majority of her life on the continent, particularly in Italy Her longest residence was just outside Florence in the Palmerino villa from 1889 until her death at San Gervasio, with a brief interruption during World War I. Her library was left to the British Institute of Florence and can still be inspected by visitors. In Florence she knit lasting friendships with the painter Telemaco Signorini and the learned Mario Praz, and she encouraged his love of learning and English literature. An engaged feminist, she always dressed la garonne. During the First World War,Lee adopted strong pacifist views, and was a member of the anti-militarist organisation, the Union of Democratic Control. She was also a lesbian, and had long-term passionate friendships with three women, Mary Robinson, Kit Anstruther-Thomson, and British author Amy Levy

Book excerpt: CONTENTS:-THE ARCADIAN ACADEMY-THE MUSICAL LIFE-METASTASIO AND THE OPERA-THE COMEDY OF MASKS-GOLDONI AND THE REALISTIC COMEDY-CARLO GOZZI AND THE VENETIAN FAIRY COMEDY. "The learning and fancy of Mr. Vernon Lee have enabled him to reconstruct the life of the Italian musical world of the last century.... Certain pages of this book quite bring us into the midst of the poets, the composers, and the singers of a hundred years ago.... The chapter on Metastasio ought to be translated as a whole and should be read and meditated by everyone who cares for art and for Italy.... The chapter on Goldoni is rich in sterling, subtle, and new observation Throughout the volume we are in the presence of a subtle and imaginative critic, of a picturesque and vigorous writer, of one who has profoundly studied a subject in which he takes passionate interest, and who has written of Italy and Italian art with a wonderful artistic intuition comparable only with that shown in some of Robert Browning's poems on Italian subjects." -Fanfulla Della Domenica of Rome. "Mr. Vernon Lee, if that be the author's real name, has written one of the most fascinating books that it has been our good fortune to meet with for a very long time. A singularly delightful and very able volume." -Westminster Review. "These studies show a wide range of knowledge of the subject, precise investigation, abundant power of illustration, and healthy enthusiasm The style of writing is cultivated, neatly adjusted, and markedly clever; it has a certain analogy to the styles of other aesthetic writers of the day, combining (we might say by way of indication) something of Mr. Wedmore and of Mrs. Pattison, with a spice of Mr. Pater, and another spice of Mr. Swinburne On the whole- it can be cordially recommended as treating an important and little known theme with conspicuous ability." -Athenæum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies of the Eighteenth Century in Italy This book is at first sight heterogeneous and anomalous: heterogeneous, because it treats two subjects which are rarely treated by one individual, and never treated under one binding, literature and music; anomalous, because it is far from dealing with all that goes to make up the Italian Eighteenth Century, while it deals with not a few men and things belonging to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Why not deal exclusively and completely with either music or literature? Why not study the satirist Parini by the side of the playwright Goldoni, rather than study the composer Jommelli, who seems to have no connection with him? Why examine the comedies of the time of Salvator Rosa and pass over the tragedies of Alfieri? Why linger over forgotten composers and singers while scientific and philosophic writers, whose works are still read and discussed, remain unmentioned? The book is seemingly most incoherent in subject, and most incomplete and digressive in treatment. But the apparent incoherence of subject is in reality unity of treatment; and the apparent incompleteness and irrelevance of treatment is in reality completeness and restriction of the subject. The book deals both with literature and with music, because the point of view of the writer is neither exclusively literary nor exclusively musical, but generally aesthetic; because the object of the writer has been to study not the special nature and history of any art in its isolation, but to study the constitution and evolution of the various arts compared with one another; and the arts whose constitution and evolution can be studied in a work on the Italian Eighteenth Century happen to be the drama and music, just as the arts which might be studied in a work on the Athenian fifth century B.C. would be the drama and sculpture. The writer of this book is neither a literary historian nor a musical critic, but an aesthetician; and both literature and music belong to the aesthetician's domain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vernon Lee was the pen name of Violet Paget (1856–1935) – a prolific author best known for her supernatural fiction, her support of the Aesthetic Movement and her radical polemics. She was also an active letter writer whose correspondents include many well-known figures in fin de siècle intellectual circles across Europe. However, until now no attempt has been made to make these letters widely available in their complete form. This multi-volume scholarly edition presents a comprehensive selection of her English, French, Italian, and German correspondence — compiled from more than 30 archives worldwide — that reflect her wide variety of interests and occupations as a Woman of Letters and contributor to scholarship and political activism. Letters written in a language other than English have been expertly translated by scholars Sophie Geoffroy (from the French), Crystal Hall (from the Italian), and Christa Zorn (from the German). The edition focuses on those letters concerning the writing, ideas and aesthetics that influenced Lee’s articles, books and stories. Full transcriptions of some 500 letters, covering the years 1856-1935, are arranged in chronological order along with a newly written introduction that explains their context and identifies the recipients, friends and colleagues mentioned. Since scholarship on Lee’s critical and creative output is still in the beginning stages, these letters will serve a purpose to students and researchers in a number of academic fields. In this first volume, tracing the years 1856– 1884, the assembled letters cover the beginnings of her career, encompassing her first publication, visits to London and encounters with some of the important artistic figures of the time. As her career begins to blossom, the letters also reflect the expansion of her subject matter from cultural studies and art history to novels and aesthetic philosophy. Correspondents include Lee’s parents, Matilda and Henry Paget; her brother the poet Eugene Lee-Hamilton; English poet Mary Robinson; English authors Henrietta Jenkin and Linda Villari; and Italian writers Enrico Nencioni, Mario Pratesi, and Angelo De Gubernatis, among others.
