As times changed, it was sold, bankrupted and resold. Construction and painters would rework and rename the ballrooms, coffee shops and bars. I lived there for a challenging, happy twelve years. Things I never expected just happened. A catalyst of people entered my life. Falling in love at 75 - a walking-on-air surprise. During the days that the Westward Ho Historical Group existed, we tramped through every accessible place, basement to 15th floor, finding unused stairs and forgotten rooms. Roaming through the underground, up the back stairs and above the stage we scuffed through years of rat droppings to bring down reminders of former glory. Long gone are the Thunderbirds, a.k.a. kachinas that adorned the Thunderbird Room and were spectators to the dramas that happened to famous names and family grandmothers. Or do they still watch? Tucson has witnessed a slower rate of growth, and has only one quarter of Phoenix's population. This was not always the case. Prior to 1920, Tucson had a larger population. How did two cities, with such close physical proximity and similar natural environments develop so differently?Desert Cities examines the environmental circumstances that led to the starkly divergent growth of these two cities. Michael Logan traces this significant imbalance to two main factors: water resources and cultural differences. Both cities began as agricultural communities. Phoenix had the advantage of a larger water supply, the Salt River, which has four and one half times the volume of Tucson's Santa Cruz River. Because Phoenix had a larger river, it received federal assistance in the early twentieth century for the Salt River project, which provided water storage facilities. Tucson received no federal aid.
