Book excerpt: An edge-of-your-seat caper based on one of the most sensational crimes in British history In August 1963, a Royal Mail train traveling between Glasgow and London was forced to make an unscheduled stop. Led by a charismatic jewel thief, a gang of fifteen unarmed men boarded the train, incapacitated the driver, and made off with more than £2 million. Divided equally, it was more than enough money for them to disappear forever—if they could all keep quiet. Incensed by the brazenness of the crime, Scotland Yard investigators employed every means they could think of to get the thieves to turn on one another. Soon, a meticulous plan descended into a desperate free-for-all as the gang went down one by one. This heart-racing novel inspired by the Great Train Robbery asks the most fascinating question of all: Who talked? This ebook includes an afterword by Bruce Reynolds, mastermind of the Great Train Robbery. Signal Red is the 3rd book in the Great British Heroes and Antiheroes Trilogy, which also includes Empire of Sand and Death on the Ice.

Over the last few years, IWDC has emerged as an internationally renowned forum for interaction among researchers from academia and industries around the world. A clear indicator of this fact is the large number of high-quality submissions of technical papers received by the workshop this year. The workshop program consisted of 12 technical sessions with 54 contributed papers, two keynote addresses, four tutorials, a panel, a poster session and the Prof.A.K.ChoudhuryMemorialLecture.TheIWDCProgramCommittee,c- prising 38 distinguished members, worked hard to organize the technical p- gram. Following a rigorous review process, out of 157 submissions only 54 - pers were accepted for presentation in the technical sessions; 27 of the accepted papers were classi?ed as regular papers and the remaining 27 as short papers. Another 11 papers were accepted for presentation in the poster session, each with a one-page abstract appearing in the proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reasoning About Actions and Plans discusses approaches to a number of the more challenging problems in reasoning about the future and forming plans of action to achieve their goals. Reasoning about actions and plans can be seen as fundamental to the development of intelligent machines that are capable of dealing effectively with real-world problems. This book comprises 17 chapters, with the first delving into the semantics of STRIPS. The following chapters then discuss a theory of plans; formulating multiagent, dynamic-world problems in the classical planning framework; and a representation of parallel activity based on events, structure, and causality. Other chapters cover branching regular expressions and multi-agent plans; a representation of action and belief for automatic planning systems; possible worlds planning; and intractability and time-dependent planning. The remaining chapters discuss goal structure, holding periods and "clouds"; a model of plan inference that distinguishes between the beliefs of actors and observers; persistence, intention, and commitment; the context-sensitivity of belief and desire; the doxastic theory of intention; an architecture for intelligent reactive systems; and abstract reasoning as emergent from concrete activity. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of cognition and artificial intelligence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to game theory that offers not only theoretical tools but also the intuition and behavioral insights to apply these tools to real-world situations. This introductory text on game theory provides students with both the theoretical tools to analyze situations through the logic of game theory and the intuition and behavioral insights to apply these tools to real-world situations. It is unique among game theory texts in offering a clear, formal introduction to standard game theory while incorporating evidence from experimental data and introducing recent behavioral models. Students will not only learn about incentives, how to represent situations as games, and what agents “should” do in these situations, but they will also be presented with evidence that either confirms the theoretical assumptions or suggests a way in which the theory might be updated. Features: Each chapter begins with a motivating example that can be run as an experiment and ends with a discussion of the behavior in the example. Parts I–IV cover the fundamental “nuts and bolts” of any introductory game theory course, including the theory of games, simple games with simultaneous decision making by players, sequential move games, and incomplete information in simultaneous and sequential move games. Parts V–VII apply the tools developed in previous sections to bargaining, cooperative game theory, market design, social dilemmas, and social choice and voting. Part VIII offers a more in-depth discussion of behavioral game theory models including evolutionary and psychological game theory. Instructor resources include solutions to end-of-chapter exercises, worksheets for running each chapter's experimental games using pencil and paper, and the oTree codes for running the games online.
