Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Christ For the Papists this week is one of torture; they sing and read and preach exceedingly much concern ing the passion of Christ. But what does it avail them? It is true, they speak of Christ's sufferings but in their heart there is no thought of them, or else they would not prize so highly their own self inflicted penances and their own works. But it is not much better with us, who have the pure Gospel abundantly preached to us; our lives and deeds indicate that we also have disregarded it. The effects of the preaching of the Word are therefore not the same with all, inasmuch as not all are dis posed to receive it. If we were to relate to the people some idle tales and stories, they would re member them at once; whereas now, thousands upon thousands hear repeatedly the preaching of the Gospel without retaining it, and without profiting by its instructions. They come back from church just as they went there. They hear the Word. But disregard it as something common and unimportant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Passion of Jesus Christ We can never at all realize or even have any idea of the meaning of the great, the stupendous fact which the Church today commemorates, unless we know and keep before us, Who it is that suffers on the cross. Hence I begin our instruction with asking - Who is it that hangs, agonizing and suffering, on the hill of Calvary? It is Jesus Christ, at once God and Man, the Eternal Word and Wisdom Of the Godhead, the very Figure of His substance and the Splendor of His glory; He before Whom the worlds tremble and the Angels are not pure. It is He Who from the beginning was in the Father; in Whom and by Whom and through Whom all things have been made; the Second adorable Person of the Blessed Trinity, and no less. Let this truth sink deep into your souls; for without it Calvary has no meaning. If Christ were but a mere man, His Sacrifice would not be that which it claims to be, and which it is our hope and security and salvation that it is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ "This book is not, strictly speaking, a series of sermons or meditations on the sufferings of our Redeemer, but it is rather an explanation of the history of the Passion. It consists of a description of the most important and most interesting trial which has ever come before a court of justice, on whose final decision depends the weal or woe of the whole human race. The book is also a commentary on the greatest drama which has ever been enacted. Even considered from a purely natural point of view, the Passion of our Lord is a drama with which none other can be compared as regards the character of the actors, the magnitude of the action, the importance of the intrigue and the complexity of the plot. The unities of time and place have even been preserved. In preparing this explanation and practical application of the history of the Passion, the author has spared no pains in gathering and using with discretion the best which Catholic learning and research has to offer on the subject. Christ Nailed To The Cross.--His Deeds, Sufferings And Words On The Cross. Matt 27, 33-56. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when He had tasted thereof, He would not drink. And they crucified Him, and parted His garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down they watched Him there; and set up over His head His accusation written, This is Jesus the King of the Jews. Then were there two thieves crucified with Him; one on the right hand, and another on the left. And they that passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads, and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save Thyself. If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking Him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved. others; Himself He cannot save. If He be the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him: for He said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with Him, cast the same in His teeth. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calletfr for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave Him to drink. The...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Meditation on the Incarnation of Christ: Sermons on the Life and Passion of Our Lord Prayers and Meditations on the Life of Christ, published in 1904 by Messrs. Kegan Paul, as also the present volume and the remainder, five in all yet to appear, of this series, embracing, with the exception of the Imitation, the complete works on Kempis. Various parts, in fact quite a large proportion of these writings have been already rendered into English, and in many cases well, but at various times, by various hands, in various forms; and it was felt that even a thorough sup plement of the portions not yet translated or not translated satisfactorily could in no wise com pare with the advantages of a complete, uniform edition, one in fact to rival in English the work so admirably done by Dr. Pohl and Messrs. Her der in the original. The fact that there is a demand, irrespective of class and creed, for these writings of h Kempis in the vulgar tongue, is one that speaks well for the English people. And whatever other reasons may be brought forward in explanation, it seems to me that the chief cause is one that lies deep in the heart and conscience of the nation. The re markable love of Englishmen for the Imitation and for the other works of the saintly I'I Kempis may be traced to the strong, personal love which, in however lesser a degree, they share with him for Our Divine Saviour.
