Book excerpt: Our Common Future is a joint work produced in 1987 by a United Nations commission headed by former Norwegian Prime Minister, Gro Brundtland. Also known as The Brundtland Report, it offers a classic approach to problem solving by first asking a productive question. How do we protect the world we live in for future generations, while at the same time stimulating economic and social development right now? The solution the work proposes is “sustainable development”, defined in the report as humanity’s ability “to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” The key conclusion the report came to – that we need long-term strategies to manage the earth’s natural resources – proved to be so universally welcomed it introduced the term “sustainability” into the everyday language of international politics. Solving the problem of workable sustainable development became a hot topic, leading to the birth of a new academic discipline, environmental economics. The book offered a solution to the problem of ensuring sustainable development by highlighting the critical importance of international cooperation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations, the world has faced its biggest shared test since the Second World War in the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Yet while our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together, international cooperation has never been harder to achieve. This report answers a call from UN Member States to provide recommendations to advance our common agenda and to respond to current and future challenges. Its proposals are grounded in a renewal of the social contract, adapted to the challenges of this century, taking into account younger and future generations, complemented by a new global deal to better protect the global commons and deliver global public goods. Through a deepening of solidarity—at the national level, between generations, and in the multilateral system—Our Common Agenda provides a path forward to a greener, safer and better future.

Book excerpt: From the large hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica to the growing evidence of a greenhouse effect caused by gas emissions, from the destruction of the Brazilian rain forests to the almost commonplace oil spills off of both the East and West Coasts of the United States, one fact is clear. We can no longer ignore what we are doing to the environment. Few publications in recent times have had as much impact on worldwide public and political thinking on this issue as Our Common Future. This report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) has helped to initiate governmental, institutional, industrial, and social policy changes on an unprecedented scale. A follow-up to Our Common Future, Signs of Hope records the progress since 1987 in the areas addressed by the commission. Written by Linda Starke, the volume includes input from Gro Harlem Bruntland, chairman of WCED, from other members of the Commission, and from key people around the world working towards a sustainable development. Starke explores the initiatives being taken at the global level, by governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), within industry and labor, and by the media. She also examines the unfinished agenda, concentrating on the priorities for change in the nineties and the areas where progress is most lacking. Published in conjunction with the Centre for Our Common Future in Geneva, which monitors the progress of WCED worldwide, Signs of Hope greatly contributes to the international dialogue on these vital issues. Everyone concerned with the global environment and what is being done to salvage it will find this volume invaluable.

How do we take the long view, ensuring that present-day policy decisions reflect the needs and safeguard the interests of future generations? In this timely BWB Text, acclaimed policy scholar Jonathan Boston sets out what ‘anticipatory governance’ might look like in New Zealand. Confronted with a world becoming more uncertain by the day, this book is essential reading for anyone questioning how democratic societies can tackle the unprecedented challenges ahead.
